Title: Car insurance opinion
Post by: Danny on 27 December 2010, 16:27:20
i know a lot of factors are considered when buying car insurance, but at 30 years old with no accidents and 4 years no claims, is £1100 (for year) alot for a 53 plate 2.6 mv6

i'm pretty sure i'm in a better than average area, and the car is on a rear driveway not seen by passing traffic, even on foot

I'd say that's quite alot. I'm 28, 4 yrs NCB, no points convictions etc, license 10 years, car parked on drive, just over £400 for the 3.0 Elite, less for the MV6

And SR4 - a former car crime capital!

I know you're not a BL post code as I am, but I think we must both be lumbered with a dodgy post code when it comes to insurance.  :(

I moved three streets away from a 2tp to a 2tf and insurance went up by 40 quid, I only pay 229 comp for my 2.6 cdx 02 with aviva and its parked on a main road  ;D ;D  shop around the only thing i have found is the xcess on most cars is higher this year

That seems very high mine is less than that and my insurance is for use as a hackney carriage with £10 million public liability and all the other legal requirements that goes with public hire and reward.

When you've phoned around everywhere else, give A-Plan a call.

in this case, i could possibly save money on the purchase price thus softening the blow

What's average list price for a 2.6 mv6, 53 plate so later spec alloys, excellent condition, full history and 74k on it? (no sunroof and not leather)

i near had heart failure when i got my Omega insured, i have a clean licence and 7 years ncd and it went from a nice £300 with the cavalier to way over £600 with the Omega. if it doesnt drop by next year im afraid i'll be selling the car, its bloody ridiculous

I think you need to weigh up what the likely costs are in terms of general running and associated legal obligation costs (insurance) before buying a big, heavy, powerful (and now relatively elderly) car like an Omega, and try and weigh up whether the pleasure of ownership outweighs the pain of the expense.
I've owned a 2.5 GLS Estate (fantastic, unfussy work-horse)for nearly three years, so was fairly well prepared for the fuel costs on the 3.0 Elite I purchased back in November, but have to admit I was surprised by the size of the insurance hike and the cost of good quality tyres for the 17" wheels...
I know I've bought an expensive car that is frequently going to fling big bills at me if I want to keep it in tip-top condition (which I do), and I still think that the pleasure of wafting around in a large, comfortable top-specced businessman's express for a ridiculously small amount of purchase money that will turn into a whole nest of very (pleasantly [smiley=laugh.gif]) noisy and angry wasps when sport mode and heavy right foot are deployed and the grin that that unfailingly produces on my big daft face outweigh the high costs of ownership  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
One thing I would say - don't ever be tempted to skimp on maintenance and try and run one of these on the cheap - if you can't afford it, don't buy one - simple as.

Eeekks.. Sounds high?

My 3.0 Elite was renewed on 12/12/10 and it was £560 Fully Comp (im 23, 3yrs NCB, Driving 5 yrs)

And I was moaning at that as it had gone up from last year even though I havn't had a claim or anything  :(

Last year it was just over £400 iirc F/C ;D

I pay around £250 for my 3.2 Elite 03 plate, with declared mods.  But then I'm old, and live in a small market town.

I know one insurance broker has told us before that they are uncompetitive in the Greater Manchester area...

my own insurance co arent budging on price to change from my bora, and i'm too early in the year to warrant cancelling, so i'm leaving it off the road until the end of march, which would be a waste but i paid a good price for it! and then when i change over i'll have to pay £500 instead of £800, there's no other way around it, but when my policy comes up for renewal in september it will be then that i decide if i keep it or not, i'll be 30 with 5 years no claims

whatever happens, i've no regrets even if i end up having to sell it, its giving me 28mpg round town, which is very good i think

Hate car insurance, I pay £645 fully comp with all the kit and mods insured, plus another 250 for business use, the latter being a complete waste, as the taxman cut my tax code due to the amount I claimed last year, need to wait and see what they do next year, as business use might just go out the window, as I get nowehere near the money it costs me, and to be hit on tax aswell just sucks :(

Ouch!

I'm with Direct Line. About 6 months ago I asked them how much it extra it would cost to add bussiness use onto my policy... Their answer... £0.00 (free)!  :o

Bloke said that they dont offer it unless you ask for it though!

Mine went up to nearly 600 with the AA this year, did some net work, & as much as I said I'd never use them because of the bloody annoying adverts, GoCompare got me down to just under £450, can't remember who it's actually with.
Reasonable postcode, driveway kept, 20 yrs driving, 1 Sp30 (now ;)) and no incidents in last 5 years. Class 1 business use £11, bout the same as I've always paid, listed as electronic engineer for a job.

Interested why the MV6 seems to be cheaper than the Elite- surely the .2L & extra 10BHP would put it up?

That sounds pretty good. That's what I used to pay before Esure shoved their prices through the roof. Someone told me they'd lost a lot of money to the Icelandic banks and were trying to get it back from their customers.

When I moved from car crime ridden inner city Sheffield (car broken into or stolen 13 times in 5 years) to Buckinghamshire (no known car crime) my insurance went UP! Reason given: "rich area, innit." Not when you're skint and move back in with your mother it isn't!
