Hello all,
Looking for a cheap (500ish) runaround for the wife.
Thought about a Peugeot 306 D Turbo, Astra (I've had Peugeot petrols in the past).
Any thoughts or suggestions on other cars would be most welcome.
Thanks
Steve

Agreed, had a couple of 400's with that engine, good mpg, seemingly reliable, I'd have another

206 HDi I would suggest. 56mpg (i did 545 miles on £55 of diesel) or there abouts, £30 a year Tax. :y

Thanks.
And a Happy New Year to all.

Rover 25 diesel. I've had one for about 5 years now and its been brilliant, i've de-catted, chipped it and upped the boost and it will stay with most modern diesels upto 80mph and it returns 50 to 55mpg on a run ;)
-
i deal in cars, got nothing in and dont know of anything that price but they are out there, i would go for a 306 diesel on a R reg, the phase 2, they go on for miles, long as you keep the servicing up. Plenty about, a lot of crap for good money, but hopefuly find a good one for crap money!, shop around something will come up

We used to get 50-55mpg from our bog standard 420SLDi's as an average - but then she used it daily on her 50m round trip commute on a 60mph road. Performance wise, it was miles better than other diesels at the time, and could hold its own against the newer 1st generation of Ford TDCi and Vauxhall CDTi. It chips reasonably well, so bags of potential to make it stand up to the new TDCis and 16v CDTi :y, and sounds like it doesn't have too bad a hit on fuel :y
-
Check it runs ok on vegetable oil and it'll be cheaper still. Means anything with a lucas fuel pump is out though.

Rover diesel engines (400, 25, 45) etc, are Peugeot engines. Omega's 2.5 diesel engines are BMW 525 Td from the nineties.

transit 2.5di swb :y
35-40 mpg, plenty of room for the shopping.
about 400 quid on the bay...

I could suggest a TD Omega, run it into the ground with cooking oil, then it's still a good source of spares! :y

I think cooking oil would choke the fuel pump on a TD
