well i need a new number 5 spark plug lead.
no garage can quote me better than 220 quid because apparently on a v6 it's a really big job
so ive sent it to groses to do it. at least geuine parts.
still bloody expense tho

Have you asked the mobile lads?
I thought we'd been through where & what to buy re HT leads. :-?
-
break me! 220 quid to change one spark lead? Tell them where to stick it and get it done by someone who knows what they are doing like Lee, Daz or EP :y
-
yeah i know and i really do appreciate the advice..... but a. i really dont understand it and b. ive had two local garage quotes who charge roughly the same.

That's we said last week when Webby first asked what a No 5 lead was.

I live in Preston. Drive it up to me on sunday and I will supply and fit you a lead for £20.

Thats mad, you can get reasonable lead sets (single bank) for about 30 quid.
And to change no 5 leads takes about 30-40 mins tops.

We showed you pictures of what you want. You just need a spark plug lead, the hardest bit is reaching the coil pack right at the back of the engine. £220 is way way too much even if you cost in a full set of pattern replacement leads. What problems did you have in the first place & how did the garage diagnose which lead is duff?

Forget that, you dont want to drive it that far on 5 cylinders. I will send you a lead for nowt and fit it yourself(piece of piss) or as said get one of the mobile chaps to do it :y

Thinking about it, how can they definitively diagnose no5 lead without fitting a known good one?
Something is not right about this one
@ Webby, where you been dude... had this one for a while. It has a new meaning now that I have been diagnosed with likely crohns, on a bad day like today all I want to do is sleep and fart ;D ;D

apparently even though its only lead 5 that needs replacing its a set of 3 they need to put in.
bent valve thanks very much for the offer but they have my car and could be working on it now
really appreciate the offer tho :) :) :) :)
and as i said guys thanks for the advice but as im mechanically challenged i went with grose just to get it done... especially when other local garages couldnt better the price

A set of leads comes as a set, so while a garage is fitting one it's as fast to fit all three on the same side.
If you were going to send your car to a garage for it to be fixed why ask the question here in the first place? We could have all saved the effort of replying to your question & finding the bits you need via eBay etc :-? :-?

I think they are going to fit all 3, but for that price I would expect all 6!

cos i was going to get the leads as you guys kindly suggested and have the garage fit them. but after ringing the garages there labour quotes were still in the 200 quid bracket (not what i was expecting) so i didnt see the point if vaux could order the parts and do it all for the same price!
sorry if ive p*ssed anyone off cos of 'waste of time helping' but i did what folks said, it didnt work out so i decided to let u guys know what i was doing.
sorry

The original post/fault
hello guys, hope you're all well. ive just had my car back from groses. the problems are:
1. revs jumping around at idle.
2. acceleration poor
3. at 50-70mph it judders like mad and then past this it evens out but still aint right!

As soon as you mention that you drive a V6 most garages see you as either a cash cow or quote you such that you'll go elsewhere cos they won't/can't do the work. When the dealer is charging £80 an hour and a set of HT lead from them are stupid money you'll soon get over £200. I'm not that convinced that HT leads are your problem. Uneven idle could be the idle air control valve (top right of the engine - right at the top) or an induction leak. :-/
Fingers crossed for you that they sort it for you, afterall you're paying through the nose for it. :y

eeeeerrrrm when have i mentioned there was a shortage of advice???
ive already said im sorry if you feel ive wasted your time with the help youve given me but ive explained myself and if that aint enough well im sorry for that too
:)

If you can get to south Nottingham I will do a free full diag for you including a HT test (usuing a dummy plug).
We can then work out what REALLY needs doing and work from there.

Dont feel bad about wasting anyones time, blokes on here are chomping at the bit to offer advice whether its heeded or not, we just dont like to see folks ripped off :y
on the plus side though, at least your car will be right afterwards, and i wouldnt be suprised if they replaced all six leads just to be on the safe side for the same money :)

Sorry Webby :-[
I think Bentvalve has summed it up ...... we as a group & me personally hate seeing people pay ££hundreds for what should be a straight forward simple task.
Let us know the outcome :y :y :y
