I was just about to go buy the stuff to do an oil change on my mondeo and while looking i came across this site http://www.national.co.uk/oil-vehicle-search.aspx its cheaper to let them do it isnt it. Has any one used them? I dont mind doing the oil change but if it will save me the trouble and money is there any point in doing this job myself apart from knowing how to do it. And if i watch them doing it to make sure it is all done properly is there any harm?

hmmm £28, or £43 depending on which castrol shite they use (for an omega)
Costs me under £15 to do an oil and filter change using genuine vaux parts

It'll be the cheapest oil they can get their hands on (regardless of what they say is best for your vehicle - it'll come out of a bulk tank).
It will also no doubt be changed by the kind of gibbon who uses a windy wrench to tighten the sump plug, and then doesn't bother to replace the filter. ::)
I would avoid, personally.

ok i may aswell do it then. Do you need any new seals for the sump plug or the filter housing?

Or use a suction pump so they dont have to bother removing the plug at all. ;)

Also been reading about adding wynnes to the oil ive had a look but there is loads of different types and just wondering if its worth putting in with it.

Nope. I would just change the oil regularly. Flushing is more trouble than it's worth.

Ok Kevin thanks. Sorry about the silly question you have all heard a 1000 times but i dont do alot on my cars myself but i am doing more and more and just need a little nudge in the right direction sometimes. I must admit if i didnt have the internet i would never attempt any of these jobs im about to do but with step by step guides it alot easier.

I started in the same boat, was this place, and especially some people in it gave me the knowledge to start doing things for myself :y

I saw an Astra 1.9 CDTi 120 diesel yesterday with 120K on the clock.
It was missfiring badly and further examination showed some rather 'worn' cam lobes and a lot of treacle in the internals.
When the owner was questioned re servicing he replied yes, it had an oil change 25-30K miles ago using some stuff he bought from the supermarket and, he did not change the filter

i thought that their race was extinct but aparently they arent ;D ;D

I should add, there is concern about the state of the rest of the engine and also how the hell it can be well cleaned as a flush will certainly require a sump removal to clean the pickup pipe afterwards.

If you're talking about the oil additive rather than the flushing stuff, I wouldn't, especially if it's the thick syrupy stuff.
I used some in a Cav GSi I had some years back. The oil warning light came on some time later, and the garage found the oil pick-up was blocked with thick goo. I think it was the additive that hadn't mixed properly with the oil.
As other posters have said, stick with regular frequent oil changes using the good stuff. :y
If I was ever to think of using oil additive for any reason I would probably go with something like MolySlip which is a lot thinner than Wynns/STP etc.
