im absolutely devastated, my gorgeous silver Omega is a write off. I still cant believe what happened, my car locked in reverse gear and hit a wall. Ive just got back from the hosptial with injuries to my leg and i cant stop crying. ive been driving for 18 years and never had a crash or accident, and now this.
All i can say is thank god i was the only one hurt. Ive lost the nicest, loveliest car ive ever owned and im gutted :'( :'( :'(
-
really sorry to hear that, glad you are not badly hurt
-
Sorry for you loss, sounds a strange one, what sort of speed was involved, did your brakes work?
Was a nice car that, saw it when James had it
-
Very upsetting news indeed Foxy, I'm glad that you're not badly injured.
Hope things get better for you soon. :-* :-* :y
-
i had just reversed to outside my house, put the car in park and the engine revved sky high without me touching the accelerator and then it went, im only assuming it has locked into reverse, but quite fankly im in no state to sit here analysing whats happened to my car and why, all i know is it was bloody scary and ive lost my pride and joy :(
-
what engine size was it? I assume one of the DBW's?
-
2.5 v6 petrol engine.
im gonna have to save up for another one now cos im only TPF&T :-/
-
so traditional cable drive then, did it have cruise control?
Sorry for the 20 questions, must be the last thing on your mind, just trying to work out what may have happened.
-
yep it has cruise, its a cdx version. im buggered if i know myself tbh, it was like it was stuck in reverse, and was spinning round.
-
I think we're all thinking a similar thing....there's written off, and then there's written off...plenty of cars that an insurer will write off are actually perfectly repairable. As far as I'm concerned, so long as the 'back' isn't broken, it's repairable, especially when you consider how cheaply donor vehicles can be had for...
I would also add I feel utterly for your loss, and hope you're feeling 100% soon. One door has closed, another is sure to open soon. :y
-
I am so sorry to hear of your loss Foxy, but thank God you, or somebody else, were not seriously hurt.
Having had one miggy written off, and another coming very close to it within the last 15 months, I know how you are feeling. What I did though was just focused on getting as much as possible from the insurance company to buy the best Omega I could afford! ;) ;)
-
its leaking something underneath, the back end as far i can see is scuffed and dented (im going on what the recovery bloke told me re the write off). The front bumper and irmscher splitter are buggered. The fog lights are smashed and he had to cut some pipe to get the bumper off (dont ask me what) Theres no damage to the headlights its all bumper and below. Oh and the drivers door wont close I Know the bloke whos recovered my car so im going down tomorrow to see what the extent of the damage really is. He s in the body repair business. if truth be told id really love this to be repaired as ive said it was the nicest car ive ever owned. I think i may have to cut my losses and get another one if truth be told :'( :'( :'(

Only insured TPF + T :(
-
yes and????
oh sorry just realised you where quoting Lizzie, sorry im very upset at mo
-
Sorry to hear your bad news Foxy. Take some pics of the damage and post them up.Might get some good advice on the best course of action. :y
-
Look at it one way lots of cars for sale at least your o k to tell the tale :y
-
Sorry about the car Anita but at least your OK. If I can help drop me a line, its a pity the silver Omega has gone to the scrapyard but i've still got the black one i'm breaking.
Pete
-
Sorry to hear about that.
Question though; if it was locked into reverse, why is the damage to the front of the car?
-
IT MIGHT ONLY BE A FINANCIAL POINT WRITE OFF BY THE INSURANCE CO,TOMORROW WHEN YOUR NOT SO SHAKEN THE REAL DAMAGE CAN BE ASSESSED,BUT THE AIN THING IS YOU ARE OK (SORT OF)
-
Sorry to hear about that.
Question though; if it was locked into reverse, why is the damage to the front of the car?
it was going backwards to begin with, in a circle, i never touched the auto box at all, as i say im guessing all i know is i HAD been reversing and put the car into park, the engine screamed very loudly and the car shot backwards (i hadnt touched the accelerator either)
Once it had hit my neighbours car, it pushed it back and my car went backwards into a wall on the opposite side of the road, then shot forward again and hit the wall front ways.
i never touched the box once, but did try to brake and this didnt seem to help. the police officer told me it was a good job he wasnt pulling ME out of the car.
i know everyone wants to work out what happened to my car but can you please give it a rest, its upsetting enough going over it again
-
Sorry to hear whats happened Foxy and I know the shock is bad but it will be a lot less tomorrow.
Don't feel pushed to answer about what happened etc, but some people are asking possibly with a view to helping you get the Mig back on the road.
There are a few silver migs in breakers around our way should she prove fixable but in the mean time , feet up, large brandy and take it easy!!!
Get back to us when you feel up to it. :y
-
Hope you're feeling better soon Anita, i'm really sorry for your troubles :(, but at least you're in one piece & that's all that matters. :y :-*
-
hey anita sorry to hear about your ill fortune, i know how much you liked that car :( hopefully things will be a bit clearer in the morning and you can check out the damage for yourself in the cold light of day. as others have said, often the *true* value of the car and the expected repair bill aren't in keeping with the insurance company's figures so i've got my fingers crossed for you ;)
-
Sorry to hear about your prang :'(
This reply might be a bit contraversial. Apologies now. My experience of insurance companies is not entirely positive, and the following is based on my own experience and as such is my own opinion. Other people will pick the useful bits from the not so useful. :-/
If you only have TPFT cover get the car recovered somewhere safe ie not where the insurers have taken it. You still own it, you can say where it is taken to.
If they write it off, you'll never see it again and they'll bump up your premiums, leaving you well out of pocket. If you DON'T claim, you CAN'T lose your no claim bonus.
Get someone knowledgeable to look the car over. If readily repairable, the bits are easy enough to come by, if not it can be broken to good effect, and the cash can be put to another car.
If the rear side windows in the boot are intact and the tailgate(regardless of condition) still opens and closes, then the back end might be ok. If the front doors open without catching the wings and the slam panel is straight and level then the front end might be ok too. The crash bars behind the bumpers can take quite substantial knocks.
Hitting a deer at 60mph cost me a bonnet and headlight. The Insignia that made my car a cat c write off folded up like a tin can. mine needed a wing, tailgate, rear wing, a few other bits and pieces and four days labour.
The Omega is a tough beast. The chap who repaired mine, (was ford apprenticeship trained), reckoned that it was stronger built than the mk2 Granadas that he was trained on in the early eighties.
Don't rush your decision, and take it easy for a couple of days.

well its deffo a write off, been to body shop today and the a pillars are damaged as well. Im gutted and am now feeling very sore and painful. I have to find a car now pretty sharpish, which is never good looking in a rush ::)
There will be a few bits available if anyone needs something, including the Irmscher boot spoiler. But you'll have to be quick as its going in 3 days.
*sigh* :'(

Note to self: always read the question ::)
Valid point. Was thinking about trying to save the car if at all poss. When my first car was nicked and recovered, I had no end of hassle getting it back after thy recovered it. By the time they returned it it had sat outside for 4 months over Christmas withall the windows open. Went from being perfectly repairable to scrap. >:(
Hope all sorted swiftly. :y
-
well ive been to sort out the car today and took some pics of the damage (not good) i'll try and upload them later (when i find my mobile phone cable). There is major damage to the cross member, and behind that ten ton of rust. Not a pretty site and shes going to be weighed in later today. I still cant believe my beautiful car has gone. Its looking very likely i'll have to buy a cheapy to run around in for work etc, so no Omega for me im afraid :'(
-
crash damage on car, excuse the odd angle i thought id get more of the damage in ::)

Foxy,
While your feeling sore and bruised at the moment. What with feeling a little tearful of your car, the good news is that you got out in one piece and able see another sunrise/sunset.
Scary experience I can understand, but like you said no-one else got hurt, so take a big breath and smile that you get to buy another Mig sometime, and sure you'll get it looking nice again.
Plenty of people on here I'm sure will be willing to help you out.
Get well soon.
M :y
-
thank you thats kind of you to say :). im gutted to say the least as i say she was my pride and joy, but the damage is bad and it would cost more than the cars worth to repair. I probably wont get another Omega for a while to be honest, the decent ones are still quite expensive to insure and run. i need something to nip around in for now that isnt quite so big an engine. I'll have another im sure just not right now with the pittance ive got to spend lol

No mention anywhere in this thread about a towball :-?.
Not doubting anything but if it was "locked in reverse" can`t for the life of me understand why the box would suddenly drop into forward gear & hit a wall :-? (Possibly an automatic change) ::)

right for all the absolute unbelievable nasty minded <admin edit> on this forum, the accelerator cable has been found to have been stuck on. sorry for not clearing that up with you all when i found out yesterday, i cannot believe the people on this forum, nit picking every little thing when id just been in a very frightening crash, as i said above i was only guessing till i found out yesterday. UNBELIEVABLE you lot who are sitting there with NOTHING better to do than criticise and make inuendos about what happened can just <admin edit> off. YOU werent there. no doubt you'll all jump on this post now but before you do just remember one thing, IM ok so try not to worry too much .
Im sorry i will not be coming back to this forum after the comments made above.

Oh come on, get real, there is clearly something not right with this post!!
I read this and thought the same .... from Park it went backwards then forwards with engine screaming :o :o
This should be looked at by some kind of expert to see why its done this ...Is there a seriuos fault with our cars electronics that makes it drive itself :-/ .. Surely some kind of safety issue here :o .
At least there were no serious injuries and i hope you recover quickly :y
-
right for all the absolute unbelievable nasty minded .....
I don't believe anybody was being nasty, just pointing out the obvious discrepancy between your description of events and the damage to the car. I'm sure we're all sorry that you've clearly been through a traumatic accident and lost your car and wish you luck in your search for a replacement. :y

We can rest assured that the selection of reverse / forward gears is 100% mechanical / hydraulic through the position of the gear selector. Electronics only come into it when shifting automatically in "D".

Surely though , however the gears work , if the car can suddenly drive forwards and backwards itself while in Park this should be investigated .
Im not for one minute doubting what Foxy said happened but this has to be a safely issue if the car can decide to drive its self .
Quite worrying really :-/

Yes, that would be a worrying fault worthy of investigation, however, the automatic gearbox fitted to the Omega is of a type that has been in production, with a series of refinements, for absolutely decades.
If there was a way for it to engage drive / reverse without the selector level on the gearbox moving it would have been resolved long ago. Maybe something unique to the circumstances of Foxy's accident caused the selector lever to move in the impact (although the linkage is oriented to "fail safe") in an impact.
Remember also that, in addition to a gearbox malfunction, the engine needs to be developing significant power for the car to "drive itself" so it requires a stuck throttle to happen at the same time.
Kevin
-
Car in drive, hand on lever, sudden stop hand thrown forwards - into R
And if reversing and smack - back into drive.
It COULD happen - I know about reverse interlock - maybe the lever was pulled up?

Which has been confirmed.
I wonder if, in the fast moving and very frightening situation, the gear leaver was caught by anything/hand/other body part :-/ :-/
Foxy, we all feel for you and are trying to fathom out what on earth has happened for the reasons stated by Proz and Kevin... The gearbox shouldn't be able to change from P to anything unaided, never mind from R to D as well. This could be an issue that others need to be aware of.
Unfortunately the written word is so easily misinterpreted and can come across so very badly sometimes.

Well clearly something caused the selector to move from Park to Reverse to Drive, and, together with a screaming engine, this may have been unwittingly caused by the OP trying to deal with a clearly frightening situation. I think we are all concerned to know what caused it, as otherwise all slush box drivers are at risk. :o

This is where I'm trying to work out what would have happened.
Anita described that she was putting the car into park, when it happened. Therefore the revs would have been at idle speed.
Even if the throttle cable stuck at this point, it would have been stuck in the closed/tickover position, so wouldn't produce the power to cause an accident of this magnitude, or prevent the car from being stopped on the brake pedal.
Either way, whatever the cause, I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing Anita all the best. The main thing is you are unhurt.
Kind regards,
James
-
The throttle may have stuck open due to a dodgy cable, but someone had to press it far enough down to make the engine scream.
Sounds like a typical confused old folks type of crash in an auto where some old dear stuffs her car through a shop window after confusing the brake with the throttle.
Honest John from the Telegraph advocates using both feet when driving an auto to prevent exactly this type of accident. Cant say I agree with him though :-/

That's what I was getting at, I guess - even if the throttle stuck - it sounds like it would have done so in the idle position, (as the vehicle was being put into 'P') so I'm trying to work out how the throttle opened in the first place?

I must admit to often using left foot braking, it can be quite useful. :y

My guess is she put it in reverse instead of park by mistake, and when it started to move backwards she floored the throttle by mistake instead of the brake, probably causing it to stick in the process

I almost always use two feet. Braking with your left foot does take some practice though. ;)

Agreed, but after driving autos for the last 15 years, it comes naturally now. :y

Like wise. ;)
Although driving a 3 pedal car every day has caused some confusion in the feet/left hand dept :-? ;D ;D ;D
-
The cause of the acceleration was why I asked about cruise, thinking if an electrical fault managed to fully pull the cable in, assuming it has the power to. Doesnt help on the gearbox position though.
