Hiya Chaps
While At the Tidworth Meet Acouple of members were intrested in my in car computer its been an on going WIP for awhile now and I have decided to take it one step further to finishing the idea.
I was getting Sick Of attaching the screen every time i got into the car so i have decided to install the screen permantly so it kind of looks factory fitted.
If in Hindsight I should of bought a 7inch screen as these fit stright into a double din space but they have a strange Res Of 600*480 and not may graphics cards support this res so i went for an 8inch Touch Screen which supports 640*480,600*800 and 768*1024.
Main Problem I had was that it was to big to fit in the Double Din Space so the area would have to be extrended so Out came the Ashtray, I smoke in the Car but i never ever use the ash tray so it was kind of wasted space.
Couple of Picys of how far i have gotten so far
Here is the Screen Taken Out of its plastic cover

Another Image this time of the Surround I measured Out an cut to size I have Found acouple of problems so its Version 1 some areas need sanding to fit better and some areas need extended acouple of mm's I hope to solve these problems in Version 2

Screen and surround together

And Finally the surround in place in the car, as you can see some parts need to be sanded back, and once i am happy with the shape it will be Sparyed the same dark grey to fit in with the rest of the surround.

If I am bothered about having the screen in the car full time that some TeaLeaf might break a window to pull it out I was thinking of proping an AtoZ up in front to look like a map had been left after reading.
So What do you think then ?

Just wondering what you use the touchscreen for. Is it sat nav and media/radio etc? :)
-
I hope you are not tipping the ash out of the window :o
-
IMHO if it looks like a standard factory fit when its in, a thief is less likely to take it, these days thieves go for after maket accessories that can be removed from any different car using a universal tool
unless they steal the whole car...
you could have a reverse parking camera set up on that screen too :y
-
Yep I have thought about a reverce Camera as the screen has a cable that attaches to the reverce lights so the screen flips over to a video input but the cameras are not very cheap and i am installing Reverce sensors in the next few days but i could have a camera also.
The screen is for my incar computer familyman it plays all my music instead of having CD's getting scratched in the car and yep it runs a GPS as well and speed Camera warning softwear also can play films and i can oparated my Mobile to be hands free through it and if needed dial a number throught the screen also but i have not tried as of yet a OBDII reader can be used through it to record all kinds of engine information.

quite impressive piece of kit then!! has it cost a lot if you dont mind me asking?

Its been done on the cheap to be honest I had a 750Mhz Old Laptop kicking about so that was free the adaptor to run it from 12V cost about £15 off ebay. The Screen was about £100, the GPS Modual and softwear was £30 off Ebay and the BlueTooth Dongle For My Mobile conection was a massive 1p off Ebay again.
So as it stands £145.01

Bargin so far that is mate, be interesting to see it all sprayed up and fitted in. Your old screen was 7" and looked good powered by the laptop.
Should look good, keep us updated :y

Looks good Craig :y Hope you document it all.....as I could be tempted :y
In the meantime.....now you dont have a need for your ashtray.....if it works ok (ie glides in and out ok) I could have a use for it ;) to replace my knackered one that doesnt glide in and out :)

A Taxi Driver with a knackered ashtray - doesn't matter any more Dave cos you can't smoke in the "office" anymore - even when not on duty ;) What you need is a Fimbles umbrella :y
