omega booked in for mot sat morn not due until middle march but i thought id get it in early as we have lots of birthdays wedding anniversary ect feb/march
checked over the car today and identified the rattle ive had for last week or so from the exhaust, thinking a new rubber/clamp may be needed.......NO ! its the cat that has collapsed, just what i need £250 ish for replacement as its got 2 cats on the section of pipe , well unfortunatly iam not prepared to put that much money into it as its costing too much to run with the miles i do 400 a week and i was thinking of chopping it in for a dirty diesel anyway..
the two choices i have at the mo are ebay spares or repair or (dare i say it) the scrap yard ! scrap doing well at the min and ive had enough of it now :( the car itself is clean and tidy and runs spot on always starts ect i just cant justify spending that amount of money plus anything else it might fail on when ideally i need a diesel anyway so prob ebay first and if no takers ill price up what ill get scrap :'(

someone here may have a s/hand cat, post a wanted ad in the test zone and ask a mod to move it for you.If you try and sell it without a ticket its not going to fetch much
-
Is it the cat internals rattling or just the heat shields?
-
The way I would look at it is, and I have done this with all my big Vauxhall's, that for 'just' £250 you can keep a great car on the road, and how many cars of Omega quality can you buy for £250?
No I would pay the money, maybe taking up the offers of help you are bound to get on here, and remain enjoying your lovely car! :y :y

That one in the link is OK as long as it`s type approved, otherwise it`s illegal from MY `01>

Not entirely sure what you mean by illegal :-/.... it does say vehicle specific and NOT universal .
It does have the pre-cat and main cat just the same as the original fitted .
Anyway it fitted mine perfectly and stopped my cat efficiency light :y

The law changed August 2009 to make it illegal in the UK to fit a non-type approved catalytic converter to a petrol vehicle registered at any date from 1st March 2001.
The new regulations were introduced with the aim to improve air quality, so replacement catalytic converters must meet the set standards for emissions before they are granted with an approval certificate.
Under the regulations, the replacement catalytic converter has to be marked with the EC Type Approval number, which has to be legible once the converter has been installed on the vehicle. The replacement converter must also be marked with the manufacturers name and/or trademark with information stating which vehicle the approved catalytic converter is compatible with also needs to be supplied. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) has been appointed to ensure the regulations are complied to. They carry out market surveillance by making random visits to premises of the manufacturers, distributors and other points of sale including fitting stations.

Who is going to check a car?
..and who is going to admit that the cat was installed AFTER the new legislation came in? ;D

Totally agree Martin. Problem is although you can source non type approved cats, not many suppliers will take the chance & supply you with one. (Suppose a few years added to your car would help) ::)
-
cheers for the links, i havnt totally given up on it yet :y its definatly the cat inards thats collapsed i was under the car today and when tapping the cat it sounds like theres a big stone rattling around inside, its booked in tomorrow for a emissions test if it still goes through this despite the rattling i will re-book the mot just cant see any point doing it until i know it will pass the emissions although i cant (fingers crossed) see it failing on a lot else if anything
iam a bit stuck on replacing the cat as its ploughing more money into when ideally i need a diesel due to mileage i do theres also the crank seal that needs doing so weighing all this up iam thinking it may be better cutting my losses and ebaying it and seeing what i get , it is still moted until middle of march so wont be sold with no mot albeit short
Any ideas on what its worth if it doesnt pass emissions tomorrow, ie selling it needing cat and crank seal doin with a mth and half mot 2001 Y reg 2.2 16v fsh starts and drives very well

-
i often think about changing my mazda for a more efficient car but i always come back to the fact that for what it costs to keep on the road in fuel and repair if i bought another more economical car i'll spend atleast an extra 2k and to me that'S alot of repair and petrol! anyway my mazda takes 12l per 100k and when i get my omega finally on the road it will seem like a hybrid to me i'm sure!!
