Title: Farewell, my faithful 2.5 GLS Estate...
Post by: tonyyeb on 29 January 2011, 17:37:59
My '95 2.5 GLS Estate went to the scrappie today, a car bought for just £400 at auction in Jan '08. It never missed a beat, and save for a new exhaust system, I never really had to spend any money on it. But with a major oil leak, iffy shockers on the rear and a failed drivers door catch, it would have been uneconomic to have got it sorted for a new MoT, so, she's a goner.
I'm very sad to see her go, she was the car that opened my eyes to Omegas and is the reason why I now own an even more expensive to run version!
RIP, M 137 ONP - you served me very well.... :'(

Aye, I can't bring myself to part with my beloved MV6. Hence I've just stuck another year MOT on it, so thats another year that that bloody Elite won't see much action ;D

Given its age and the Issues it had you have probably done the right thing!

When a car serves you well it still a shame.

Anyone want to have a guess at what the scrappie gave me for it?

It was driven under it's own steam into the yard......

1st prize to Mr Shackeng!

Bang on.... ;)

So, 3 years, 28,000 miles - net outlay £200  :)
Budget motoring at its best...!

Nice one mate, very sensible motoring at £1.30 a week. It makes the fuel costs almost unimportant! :y :y :y

Oh, and by the way, I feel the need to clarify my thinking behind the use of the word 'uneconomic' - it was 16 years old, had done 168,000 miles, was poverty spec, fair bit of surface rust through untreated stone chips, one long hit and run scrape down the off-side, both headlights pitifully dim (and therefore dangerous to drive) through degradation of the reflectors, and was bleeding oil profusely.....she just had to go.
On the other hand, I'm quite prepared to spend 'uneconomic' sums of money on the 3.0 Elite - I know I'll never get the cash back, but I just don't intend to ever part with it. I see it as a bit of a project - want to make it the very best it can be. Intend to remain 'standard', but might consider some engine tweaks.... ;D
