Title: Skover project
Post by: venom on 11 January 2011, 19:41:15
I'm picking up a 1991 Skoda Rapid at the weekend as a small project which some of you will know already.

What I intend to do is junk the 60hp 1.3 lump and replace it with a 160hp Rover 1.6 K series engine running a Megajolt ignition system, breathing through a set of Suzuki 1200 Bandit carbs, completely striped out interior with a full roll cage to stiffen it up, drop it 35mm, rear disc conversion & I'm sure I'll think of other tweaks as I go along  :D.
This post will be a bit slow as I'm off to hospital next Thursday for an op on my foot so will be out of action for a few weeks but when I'm able it will be full steam ahead & I'll get pictures up Monday of the car.  :y

Can't wait to get started, I've have measured the block for the adapter plate for the transaxle to the Rover block and as far as the flywheel goes I can use the Skoda flywheel, the Rover flywheel is a similar size, but uses a 200mm friction plate, and the ring gear is in the wrong place so to use the Skoda flywheel apart from more mounting bolts, the centre bore is 35mm for Skoda and 34mm on Rover so to get the flywheel sat central I'll get a turned a brass sleeve pressed in and turned it out to 34mm  :y this will allow me to make up a 34mm mandrel and bolt the 2 flywheels concentrically back to back and have look at the mounting bolts & drill them appropriately  :y

I would go the whole hog and fuel inject it, TBH. Megasquirt instead of 'jolt and a set of bike throttle bodies + injectors off ebay. :y

If you ever need any help with anything Megasquirt, drop me a PM. Been playing with them since 2003.

Flat feet operation :o :o :o :o

I had a toe straightened as it was curved under another - slightly too long toe, so tendons pulled it at a funny angle

I'm not getting it done because I have flat feet, mine is for the tendons as 15 years ago I was dragged under a 10 ton forklift and broke my ankle but I have to have the same op to fix the tendons  :'(

She's generally good just the odd bit of rust & two water leaks but 80% OK cant wait to get the op out of the way and get cracking  :y

I'm almost ashamed that was attached to my A Frame ;) ;D ;D

This may not end up a Skover either from the conversation Venom and I had... It may end up as a Skauxhall ;D ;D

Easy does it! Don't want too much weight overhanging that rear axle or it'll be a bit of a Skoditchfinder. :o

I'm afraid it will be a Skover as the transaxle wont take the torque of the Vauxhall lump  :(

are these the skodas that (forgot the tech term) carry the weight on the driveshafts with the difficult to remove rear drums?

Well did a small bit today, took off the poxy body kit, front and rear bumpers & rear panel in readiness for the engine removal over the weekend.

it was auto grass racing had a few wins against mk1/mk2/escorts  as they where good off the line with the engine over the drive wheels.

I've looked at the flywheels.

The Rover flywheel (Left) is a similar size, but uses a 200mm friction plate and the Skoda is a 190mm plus the ring gear is in the wrong place. So I looked at mounting the Skoda flywheel to the crank. Apart from more mounting bolts, the centre bore is 35mm for Skoda and 34mm on Rover.

So to get the flywheel sat central, I got a brass sleeve made, pressed in and had it turned out to 34mm

This allowed me to make up a 34mm mandrel and bolt the 2 flywheels concentrically back to back and have look at the mounting bolts.
2 holes nearly line up, and the 5 remaining (4 bolts and 1 dowel hole) can be drilled into the Skoda flywheel. The 2 that nearly line up will be slotted the 3mm so I now have the required 7 holes for the Rover crank  :y

Well did quite good today and got the interior striped out and so far can only find a quite a big bit to weld up

And this is it but looks like some time ago it's had a bit done here before

And here

Without poking around to much the rest seems solid enough.

Looks like the rear screen rubber needs replacing as it's leaking.
