Title: Big Thanks to the Maintenance Guides!
Post by: dippydave on 10 February 2011, 00:57:10
Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who's made the effort to write and post maintenance guides. Partly because I'd lost my haynes manual and wouldn't have known where to start, and partly because they're written better!

Last week I used several and my car went happily through the MOT retest :). I think it helps that the tester is rather partial to vauxhall v6s!!

I used the rear shock changing guide - that really helped and the whole thing went easily. The only tricky bits being the delay it took to order the part from Vauxhall, the amount of torque needed on the top nut (as the guide is different to Haynes) and the need for a long 16mm socket. (How annoying is it that they give 15 and 17 in sets!!)

In fact I spent more time while under the car seeing future little tasks. :D

The other guide I used again was for front tie-rods. Again, it was great. Had an issue with stripping the thread on the track rod end :( but second time round it went smoothly. And GSF even took the mangled new one back. Nice! One point I would make is the torque settings for inner and outer really are barmy. one feels too loose and the other way too tight! :)

Anyway, a happy day with spanners :)

Sorry Jim and admins, I did indeed have good intentions posting the link and hadn't considered it was in breach of copyright. Thanks for swift action!

I do like an electronic copy as I paid for a paper one and it's the same as me scanning it in only faster. an online one is just easier to use and less likely to get lost!

anyway, my main thanks was to the hard work of guide writers on here - long may that continue!  :y
