Title: Front parking sensors
Post by: griffin on 15 February 2011, 20:37:45
Hi

I know this is probably a stupid question but I'm just intreguied thats all - but how do front parking sensors work. I mean I understand reversing sensors, they come on when you select reverse and beep when you're close to something behind. But front sensors are they permanently switch on and only activate at slow speed? if so is'nt that anoying in traffic jams if you get to close to the car in from.

Would love to know!!

 :)

Many different systems AFAIK... BMW/Merc systems seem to be active all the time. The cheapo ones I once fitted to a RR came on when you applied the brakes ::) They soon got disconnected :-X

Also seen them with a switch on the dash :y

Thanks for that. Switch on the dash seems a bit pointless imo. but hey each to their own.

The front and side sensors on my Sprinter work all the time but you have to get real close for them to go off.

basically just work at low speed on VW-depending on spec you can get further assistance from light system on left and right of dash so you see proximity to obstacle in direction you are looking. Some systems you have to look down at the screen in dash - both alarm assisted of course

Mine become 'live' when braking but can be a PITA when the nose dips & they go off when not really necessary! I reckon if ever I need a new front bumper I will refit them as high up as possible so no/much less chance of this happening?  ;D:y

when in reverse they should stay on also as long as you are at low speed - eg reversing out of drive and avoiding hitting front end on gate post for example!!

And all you can see is the leading edge of the bonnet. Everything beyond that is invisible from the drivers seat. Modern cars eh! ::)

Not at the factory. AFAIK.

I still fail to see how either front or rear sensors are an improvement on looking where you're going. If, for example, you're looking at BMW's reverse sensor screen, you're looking in completely the opposite direction of travel!  :-? :-?

I use mine in my street where parking is tight because the back of my car seems to be about 2 miles away

I did the 'forward, forward, forward *THUMP* that's the wall then' trick the other week.. not used to a car with a bonnet that long & tapered (you can see where the MR2 ends quite easily) - and our work carpark is incredibly tight on space.

Reversing sensor is great for reversing up to a low car (like the MR2) too - where you can't see the bonnet of the MR2 at all - your view starts at the windscreen upward..

My only concern with the omega is clattering a soon to be fitted irmscher front bumper when parking up to a high, or even normal hight kerb. Front sensors would help there IMO but personally don't see the need otherwise as the stock bumper is high enough with a rubber lip just in case.

the Irmscher front bumper is a bit of a pain and you have to stay well clear of kerbs when parking front end in - mine is scuffed on the underneath.

going back to rear reversing sensors the Phaeton has a light system in the roof above the rear seat which you can see in your reversing mirror - oh and I have a reversing camera as well but that was an extra!!

You'll soon develop a new habit ... reversing into parking places ... ..  :)
