Go and drive one first... I'd rather have the Mondeo it's based on ::) ::)
-
2.5 and 3.0 versions are four wheel drive,2.0 and 2.2 diesel's are front drive only,I've driven both of the diesel models and a 3.0 manual but was'nt that impressed with any of them
-
The diesel sounds like a transit van/mondeo :D :-X :y
-
A Mondeo with delusions of grandeur. All fur coat and no knickers, so to speak. ;) :D
-
lol overall not great then.
ive always liked the look of them. me and the old man just fancy the jag experience :y
-
They aint as bad as everyone is making out, my stepdad has had a 53 plate 2.5 V6 Sport for years now, its lovely to drive and has not caused any problems since he has had it apart from brakes and tyres as its quite heavy on both.
Not really my cup of tea but I wouldnt say no if I had too

If you fancy the Jag experience, get an XJ :y

i dont think we can afford anything above the x type model tbh

Great to drive, the diesel is quite frugal. Some have had reliability issues, oil leaks, lambda issues, PAS pumps blowing up...
....but it is essentially a mondeo with a posh different shell
-
that is nice mate. was really wanting as young as pos with as low mileage as pos under 2k. something like this...89k miles.

If you fancy the Jag experience, get an XJ :y
+1
get an XJ12 or one of the X300 series and use the change to do it up. That's the real jag experience, buy it cheap and spend a butt load of money keeping it on the road ;D ;D ;D
-
hahahaaha thats what im trying to avoid! :D :D :D
-
At the end of the day Webby, you get what you want/are happy with/can afford :y
Personally, the Jag experience is the XJ. Brother in Law treated himself to an XJR (supercharged) last year and what a car!
Of course... If I was spending more I'd be looking for a XF :y :y

thanks for all ta posts..... i think ill have to test drive and see if i like it :)
have you ever test driven a car that you immediately hate, anyone?

Yep... Whe I bought my TD Cavalier I test drove a TD Mondeo of the same era (1994 vintage)... I wasn't keen on it but loved the Cavalier, the (then) SWMBO preferred the Mondeo ::) I won because it was my car ;D
When I worked in the garage I drove many different cars on road test... Nothing overly memorable TBH, except for the stretched Granada's the local funeral company used as "Limos"... They went sideways very easily :-X :D

Yep - a Sierra, which I then got talked into buying :-X :-X.......I was so disinterested in cars etc during my thitries that I actually kept it nearly 9 years. ::).........then I bought the Sennie and remembered what it was like to be in love with your car. :-* :D ;D

My boss has had 2
First needed a transfer box and was sold when the engine started making funny noises and needed new shells.
Second is a diseasel and had a rear caliper fail recently on handbrake

Reliability-wise the model seems to suffer from electrical maladies, running gear is usually quite reliable. At speed they're quiet and sure-footed if also a bit underwhelming if I'm honest. They don't do anything wrong and in fact the front-wheel drive version is for me slightly more entertaining. But the underpinnings do give themselves away sometimes.
Build quality is decent but if there is one thing that lets them down in my view it's the interior. The materials are clumsily specced and the finish is not as good as you would expect.
Others have already suggested that the bigger XJ is a more rewarding buy secondhand and I would agree with that. An X300 series or a late facelift XJ-S would be a better purchase, mainly because if you buy right they won't lose much money over a couple of years (if any) and they look so damned good on your drive.

I think in these days of the £6 gallon and exorbitant insurance costs you would have to be mad or seriously well off to consider buying a used XJ or XJ-S.
I think the X Type is a lovely car, at a bargain price and as its based on the Mondeo, should prove reliable and relatively cheap to maintain.

my father had a 95 xjr and what a fantastic car fast as the wind and reliable to boot in the two years he owned it it only needed tyres and servicing although tyres aren't cheap for them, i've heard the xj8 has a few reluiability issues with gearboxes and motors!

The first car I would buy if I won the lottery is the XFR with a custom exhaust. Test drove one once and fell in love. When I had the XF PL deisel that too was a nice car but just not quite fast enough. The newer 3.0 deisel though apparently has a butt load of hp and even more torque! SO stay away from the 2.7 ;)
Plus the ride is amazing, I did the 4 hour drive from Hannover to Frankfurt in 2.5 hours once and the wife slept in the passenger seat the whole way. Even when we hit 155 and stayed there for 20 mins she didn't even stir :y

Best to avoid Ford era Jags - all bolted together from various, random parts bins...

fiat bravo 1.3 on an r reg - dunno the spec, but it was faecesing awful
I'm not gonna go into details but the 1.1 ka I got as a courtesy car when mrs egg wrote it off ( :D :y ) seemed like about 6 steps up.

No bad thing either when you consider how well Jaguar has performed in the JD Power survey - the XJ was better than Lexus.
;)

I've had 2 X-Types, both 2.5 V6 Autos and both brand new. It's the only time I've ever replaced one car with another of the same type.
I loved them. Very comfortable and certainly powerful enough with something like 195bhp. Handled superbly with 4wd. I didn't have many problems, only an unbalanced drive shaft (which took 4 attempts to fix - they replaced each shaft one at a time) sorted out under warranty (and I got to drive an S-type as a courtesy car each time).
The "tarted up Mondeo" is a bit of a myth really. The cars share very little, and the only thing the engines shared was the block itself. The heads were Jaguar specific, as were all the internals (although whether the same is true of the diesels I don't know).

I have an X300 XJR an "M"-plate supercharged 6-cylinder car, it's just about the best vintage, combining rear-drive, cheap cost, great performance, reliability and performance ( I mentioned that twice on purpose ). It owes me £1450.
personally I wouldn't bother with an X-type, just 'cos it's wrong-wheel-drive and that really offends me.
Actually, Woody jr. works for Jaguar - all the insiders hate them, mainly because they were designed in the 'States, with no ( absolutely no ) input from the UK.
-
Go for an s type webby great car but avoid the v8 engine the liners self destruct. :y
-
Get an S-Type, the X-Type is just an expensive Mondeo, and serves no purpose other than, it allows you to be able to say, "I've got a Jag" instead of "I've got a Mondeo". :y

Not really that expensive anymore though
£1695 for a 51 plate with sub 100k.....?
Sounds like a bargain to me.

2 jobs ago I inherited a passat 4motion v6 2.8. One sunny afternoon with hardly anything else around me and a bloke in a Mondaguar had a bit of a set-to on the A27 near Chichester. No worries on the straights, but come to a roundabout and he left me wallowing, so I agree they seem to handle well in the right spec.
