Title: Omega Diesel MPG figures
Post by: twiglet on 24 February 2011, 11:16:28
No doubt this has been discussed at length before...

I'm currently using an old cavvy diesel for my 40 mile backroad blast to work and back, and getting a genuine 50mpg.  However, the old girl isn't getting any younger, so I'm considering chopping her in for an omega diesel.  Thing is, depending on where you read it, the quoted mpg figures for these cars vary greatly!!

So I'm after some real world, average mpg figures for the 2.2 and 2.5 in saloon or estate guise...

TIA  :y

My old Manual 2.5TD Estate, would do around 40 to 45 mpg on a run and around 37 mpg in London when empty.

When used for working, lots of heavy stuff in the back with ladders and roof box the run dropped to about 38mpg but still got 35 mpg all day long running around London.

If it's of any help I had a 2.5Td auto saloon from new back in '97. My tank average varied between 36 and 40 over a 2 year period.

Had the manual 2.5TD estate.
Got around 32mpg just short stop/start journeys and up to 46mpg on long M/way type runs.

The 2.2 returns better figures I do believe.

All three 2.5TDs that I've been involved with have been manual-boxed jobs.
All three have returned a proven 33 mpg running locally around here, and 22mpg towing caravans.

Going to the Farnborough meet on Saturday, and will be interested to see what she returns whilst cruising solo.

Although its not my record,
the car i have just bought (2.5td manual estate) came with a little notebook full of MPG and service history for the last 30k miles (for every tankfull) and it seems it averages across that 30k about 37.2mpg.
Peaking around 42 and dropping as low as 30 when towing.

Personally, I've had about 40mpg on a run back from collecting it, all motorway.

So, whilst not amazing (like the 55mpg always from my old 2.0l rover td), it's fair for the size of car you get and the fact its a late 80's designed 6 cylinder bmw turbo diesel engine.....

I imagine the 2.2 is somewhat more frugal...although at 1500kgs, its hardly going to matter lol.
