Title: Project Vectra
Post by: omega18 on 08 July 2007, 18:14:14
Hi, All

Could any anybody on here give me some advice RE the project Vectra I have bought?

Have just to been looking how the car runs (even knowing I can not move it off the drive), I have cleaned the breather system out (2.0L) and cleaned the cam cover out. The engine is burning oil when you give it somes revs, but not at idle. I was obviously thinking valve steam seals or piston rings.

The results below are from a compression test I carried out:

Cyl 1= 200psi
Cyl 2= 210psi
Cyl 3= 220psi
Cyl 3= 220psi

I think that this indicates their could be a problem with cylinder No1 and maybe No2?  :-?

Any adivce appreciated!!

Many Thanks Karl

Thats a good compression test, I would not be worried to much about those....

Remind me, this ones not running on No 1cylidner?

Have you tried swapping no 1 and 4 leads at the coil pack end and seeing if the fault moves to no 4 cylinder...?

Remember also that its a piece of piss to creat a spark at atmosperic conditions.....its a big difference to do it in a pressurised cylinder.

Thanks for the reply MDTM,  :y

The car is running fine on all 4 cylinders but there is blue smoke coming out of the exhaust when reving the engine (stationary).
I was looking at getting the engine running truly smooth because I can not get on do the the gearbox and/or clutch at the moment.

Is there blue smoke briefly as you rev it after idling, during revving it or after revving it.

The blue smoke is briefly there during revving, so I suspect that it maybe the valve stem oil seals?

Stem seal smoke on first start up and follwing period of closed throttle de-acceleration/high cylidnervac.....

My money i have to say would be on excessive numer one bore wear....but, do sort the breather system out first (if not already done..)

The breathers have just been cleaned out over the last couple of days, the breather up from the crankcase to the cam cover was blocked with what appeared to be a carbonised oil mess...the camcover was also blocked. This has now been cleaned out throughly

I find it strange their would be excessive wear after 75000 miles though...may have something to do with the blockage in the breathers...the mess could be in the crankcase, could bits have possibly damaged a piston ring seal..a scrapper type one?

Any more ideas on this? or am I best just stripping the head of and inspecting the bores and rings?

Cheers Karl

I assume the throttle body etc was all well cleaned also.....

In which case, run it for a bit and keep an eye on it.....it might well clear.

yep, the throttle body appears to be brand new... there was no mess on it and it was spotless.
It's a shame I can't say the same for the crankcase breather and the cam cover. I have had it ruuning for approximatley 5-10 mins and was still very heavey with oil!

Any wet on the plugs?

There was no wetness on the plugs although they did have a covering of light carbon...but only on 1 half for some strange reason!

I have been looking at it again and it smokes when revving but also on the return to idle...
