A mate of mine bought a vectra 2003 2.0 dti (y20dth) cheaply with a broken crankshaft,he has sourced a second hand engine and fitted it and at first all seemed ok,he rang me tonight to say that this engines crank has bust as well,is he just unlucky or is there a problem with these engines. He used the original fuel pump and dual mass flywheel, any connection ???
thanks
Henry

Not a known issue.
I guess the question is, has the crank really broken.....

The first motor ,yes at the centre main journal, second engine yes but not sure where yet, crank pulley moves a little but flywheel doesn't
-
Question is then....whats happening at the gearbox end and is the gearbox input shaft free to rotate?

dual mass was checked when second motor fitted and all seemed well, gearbox was free and car was driving nicely, was travelling at 30 mph in fourth gear when second failure occured

Well, hes doing something wrong somewhere as:
'rare event' x 'rare event' = 'lightning strike probability'
which is equal to
'another fault causing the issue' :y

agreed,if its not a common fault and this car has suffered it twice something is very wrong, but what ???

my gues would be the dmf, it must be out if balance at certain rpm which you could not check for with visual inspection?
actually thinking about it
do these have a two piece crank pulley? i.e harmonic balancer on the front of the engine

yes it does, but each engine had its own which were left as was,I reckon your right with the dual mass :-X
