Welung666 came over last night to replace the thermostat, got it all stipped down, went to replace the thermo. only to discover the dealer had given me the wrong thermo.
What a waste of time and for Welung666 who came over.
Car in bits, back to the dealer today.
Not happy.

Its not the length of the bolts is it AA?
-
That was one problem, yes, but the seating was slightly different as well.
-
Thats very odd, if its the right shape then there should be no issues, its not like there are more than one version for the V6
-
The only issue I had once was that the o ring supplied would not fit in its recess. It needed a round in profile o ring the one that came was square in profile. . .
-
The body wasn't as thick, so we had to cut the bolts down, put it all back together and water was pouring out.
Stripped it down again, and double checked them against each other, the rubber 'O' ring was slightly smaller, on the new one.
-
Problem now is, Lee dosen't know when he'll be free again.
-
What part number stat were you supplied?

Yeh, the square section seal only seems to fit the large flanged stats.
The thin flanged stats need like a small fibre type seal (which doesn't work very well actualy!) which I am pretty sure Vx dont sell anymore (which I have flagged as an issue a number of times to them)
You could of swapped the inserts over to the old housing though....

Housing V0090502201
Seal V0024447061

So, is that the way to go?

They have given you the late seal ring which is incorrect for that stat.
For the stat you have you need 90502258 seal ring and new bolts 11094901
Andy
Oh and transfer pipe seals 9129999
-
The transfer pipe seals are correct, thanks.
-
The best option is to get the later stat as the seal setup is MUCH better and MUCH more reliable

Anyone got the part number for the later stat please?

I can't see that part number for the seal ring on EPC.
-
I'm going to take it all back to the dealers, now.
Will report back later.
-
Right thermostat, wrong 'O' ring, parts sorted (hopefully).
Thanks for everones input :y
-
Both of the options are the right stat AA, but the one with teh thinner flange is the poorer quality one.

It's the only one now stocked, so I'm led to believe.

But why did you not put some sealant/black goo instead of the o-ring? WOuld have saved you a lot of hassle, wouldn't it? :-/

It's not that easy, as the area around the stat seal is recessed.
I am also feeling incredibly guilty. I remember late last year I offered to help with this job, and completely forgot about it :-[

The stat housing has the groove for O-ring and the mating surface in the vee is flat. So, putting the sealant to the housing side and tighten up, why it would not work?
No, I do not admit (yet :'() having done this to my car because the aftermarket stat leaked with its own O-ring :-[

If you want to fill a groove with sealant, rather than an O ring - crack on.
I won't be following suit!

Not saying rather, no! But in my case, as the housing and seal were that poor and did not have the original parts on hand I had no choice... And that's what I meant for the OP also, if it will work it would have saved some hassle :y Or am I completely wrong with my "solution"? I know you SHOULD use the correct parts and methods and I also respect them, genuine cam cover gaskets, genuine or Gates belts etc... :y

bodging is all well and good but i must say when it comes to the coolant or any other sealing system i believe you need to be thourough but i get what your saying with what's to hand i've certainly been in that situation!

Welung came over last night, thermostat sorted :y
Note - if anyone buys a thermostat from a dealer, make sure they give you the round 'O' ring, as there are 2 part numbers quoted on EPC.

Mine had in the original stat flat -sided "o"-ring, e.g. the cross section was merely square and it had some grooves also on the mating surfaces :-/
