Title: Oh good
Post by: Del Boy on 31 March 2011, 17:38:33
Gearbox in my van has been making a horrible whine in 2nd and an even louder whine in 5th, luckily it's warranted until 30-05-2011 so just in time.

I don't see that it's acceptable really that a gearbox should last 2 years and 10 months including 54,000 miles. They've ordered a gearbox so should be sorted by Monday I hope, pain in the arse though.

Is this the gearbox in the van that's chipped and running quite a bit more torque than standard, by any chance?

Considering my van has no performance modifications what so ever, no it isn't.

Ah, they just don't make gearboxes like they used to, then.

MR2s (even with their paltry torque figures) have a habit of killing input shaft bearings - largely because Toyota decided to use plastic shelled bearings, I suspect.. probably because they're 3p per unit cheaper.

Anyway, I thought your silver van had a chip. My mistake, sorry.

My mate has one, 220 BHP & 500nm. Mine was going to get one, but I'm selling and getting a later van.

If it did have one in i'm sure it wouldn't still be on when it went in for the warranty work ;)

The 'box in my brothers '07 Astra Sri Sport hatch was on its last legs by 50k. Not sure that that 6 speed close ratio 'box is quite up to the torque of the 150 cdti lump. :-/

Mind you the rest of the car wasn't too far behind either... :-/

The M32 gearbox which is in the Astra is on it's limit with the 150 CDTi engine. Only reason they use the M32 is because they couldn't fit the F40 gearbox out of a Vectra in an Astra. A extremely stupid design if you ask me, the power it can handle, the torque it can't as you said.
