Spent all day trying to change the springs on the back of the MV6. Failed.
How many sets of rear springs have I changed on Omegas before, then have such an epic fail on mine :-[
Still, all back together (with the old springs), as I need the car tomorrow, and she needs hers (MV6 was blocking her in). Confirmed the subframe bushes are shagged though :'(
So I'm knackered, my back is screwed, and the MV6 still has a saggy ass.
Attempt 2 will have to wait until April.
-
Know how you feel on the bad back front, it's an age thing I think :-/
-
We all have days like this TB, hopefully April will go better for you.
-
I'm gonna go to work with a right monk on tomorrow. A lot of effort and absolutely no further forward.

Daz or Pete will do them for you. They are very reasonable, don't have bad backs and know what they are doing are willing and able. ::)

Only if you let it get to you chap. Could be so much worse and you don't have a car to use for work ::) .
Use the thoughts of how why it didn't go right and how you can get it right next time.
Believe me, it could be worse. I have an adapted car (disabled drivers controls), try having a car that won't run, having no back-up to use and having to use a rather rip off taxi service to take you to work, then having to get your mate when they have the time to run up up to an autoservice shop or a helping hand to get the car back on the road so you have mobility.
As the Monty Python 'Yorkshire men'" sketch went...

"You were lucky" ::) ;D ;D
Watch the clip, have a laugh and forget how bad today went, tomorow is another day :y

so has my mrs ;D time to get someone else to have a go tb save the back pain

I'm not sure what I did wrong. I just couldn't get the subframe low enough, and not enough room to get compressors on it.
Only other one that has given my grief was AA's, but he had heavy duty springs, complete with spring assisters.
-
Sounds similar to when I did them on my old pfl, was a right pita and I couldnt really work out why. Got there eventually.
Can sympathise with the back trouble. I havent been able to put my own socks on this week. ::) All due to the stupid bird next door who locked her kids and keys in her car. ::)
-
at least you tried something for your car, better than my saturday and friday , which I tried to find a good car (spend lots of fuel and time) for a friends son who were decisionless even on mint cars.. :(
-
Have an idea.
1. use spring compressors to compress the spring enough to clear bodywork / suspension
2. use some steel tie wraps to secure the spring in place
3. undo compressors slowly
4. place springs in place, slowly jack up suspension to close the gap, then cut the steel tie-wraps.
Anyone else think this could work ?.
Just an idea :y

What's wrong with Mark's Guide ?. Undo shocks and anti roll bar, lower the diff and remove by hand. Ok I was luck on my facelift 'cause all bolts came off, but....

Thats what I did. Its what I always do. No idea why it didn't work.
Jacked up, wheels off.
Release the brak lines from the chassis.
Undo ARB
Undo lower shock mounts
Undo 4 bolts holding rear subframe bushes
Undo exhaust
Lower diff/subframe
Where did I go wrong?

changing springs is not a one man job without an apparat unless you are hercules.. :-/
-
know how you feel mate started at7.30 round a mates workshop to do the rear nrside bearing that was weds at 10.30 found out the bearing id picked up was wrong one not my fault , so next day mate had to finish for me another 3 hours it was a bastard, then sat morning i start on front brakes as id got new disc,s and pads thought id go whole hog stripdown and paint carriers and calipers great then put new discs on even painted centre of discs to keep from rusting, then noticed one wear indicater knackerd shot out got another brill this is going well then assembled and at 3 pm opened box with the pads yep you geussed it wrong bloody pads so shes sitting on stands still cant get enywhere till monday, enyway tidied up steinmetz grill while waiting, >:(

Rears on an Omega are normally a doddle.
I'm convinced I've forgotten to do something, no idea what though....
-
Sounds ok to me...
the only other thing I need, is generally someone to stand on the hub to help ease spring in / out....but estate springs are a little longer iirc so need the extra help.
-
I've had to lever them out that last little bit with a pry bar before, other occasions they practically fell out. I fully expect agro with my current car as it sits too high. Maybe it depends if the donut bushes are new? (makes mental note to do springs first and see)
But what's up with your subframe bushes? I assume you mean the dif ones, which where spotted when lpg'd....?
-
Sounds like you were missing a useless student and his driveway, be sides my far superior tools would have done the job ::) :D ;D
Anything LPG getting in the way of the diff dropping fully? LPG fuel line to your filler? :-/
-
I did wonder if the new bushes were a factor. Guess they need to be undone :(
Diff bushes are worse than suspected. Know of a supplier?

Never had to buy any dif bushes yet. First thought would be all german I guess...? :-/

If you come back down to mine we can use the car lift to change them. Wont take me long :y

That could be the basis of a plan... ...esp if GayBoy Gixer could learn how to do rear bushes at the same time ;D
-
Don't fall for it Gaffers, it's all a game..... although he might bloody leave me alone then .....yes take it to Gaffers, he'll do it for you :y
-
So I guess the bushes need doing as well? Might as well do them both at the same time

You're lost without my expertise :D

Had another go yesterday. Failed.
Even if I get old out, 'new' to the car look same length. No room for compressors :(
Looks like a previous owner has used a bar in the past, looks like one of the rust marks/dings lines up with where a crowbar would go >:(
I reckon the doughnuts might have to be undone... ...I'll have a chat with OOF closet gay over a curry at some point about it...
-
I spend whole friday afternoon and saturday for a fuel pump.. (free ;D because I found a nice and cheapo car for a friend :) and he paid my pump :))
friday afternoon searched for the pump.. found 2 models.. become valid after I took it out..
being lazy to buy new clamps I used the originals.. ;D
saturday, after shopping miggy decided to rest in front of home.. I called the bosch pump service for guarantee they said bring it to us.. when I took out I saw the clamp holding the hose inside decided to quit the game ;D :-[ so called them again and told it was my fault..
but now solved the problem .. it was starting up a bit late when warm..
ps: the plastic casing where the pump sits was full of dirt and metal particles .. spend considerable effort to clean them :-?

Fat mate to stand on hub while you slot out / in?
thinking back to newent...If you remove those donuts you may have trouble getting the bolts to line up again :-/
-
wanna have another crack at it Wednesday night?
-
when i did mine i did it this way http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1297536502 and with the weight sitting on the car put the compressors on then let the hub drop i stood on the hub a little and they came out getting the new ones in were not so bad as they were irmschers so a little shorter and i must agree there was not so much room for the compressors i got one on the back of the spring upside down and one on the front right way up if that makes sense
-
did my springs all round last week, no problems at all tbh.... and the ride hight is/was higher than spec. so presume longer springs. It did stress the unhooked exhaust though(wince)
was the car high enough so the wheels didnt hit the floor before the springs could be freed? ::)

Wheels were removed, and I've only attacked driver side. I'm wondering if the new doughnuts are stiffer, and not allowing suffiicent flex for the subframe to drop enough, esp as it wasn't really stressing the unclipped exhaust.

ah yes I suppose they would be... :-[ ;D
Aren't yours Febi bushes, iirc?

always remove the anti roll bar links and the trackbar on the rear meself, takes 2 seconds with the windy gun, belt with hammer and it drops out then rear shock off, dont need compressors on spring this way?

You forgot the brake lines ;)
antirollbar disconnected. track rod makes no difference if you lower the diff. Exhaust unclipped, brake lines unclipped.

lower the diff?? waaaay to much work for rear springs!!! yep 4got the brake line unclipping ::)

And is easier on trailing arm bushes, no?

According to the haynes manual you have to remove the HID Rear level sensor - there's no mention of this in mark's dtm guide or the above so do you remove it or not bother?

No need if following the guide as the arm remains within the designed range of movement, then the dif drop allows the subframe to move away "as a unit" from the chassis to get the springs out, hopefully. So the sensor is fine.
However if removing the arm or similar then obviously yes remove sensor. It's things like this that catch out the unwary, hence the guide is the recommended method. Master is always right very rarely wrong. ;)
