Title: TheBoy's magic fuel tank...
Post by: TheBoy on 13 April 2011, 19:44:54
...that he is trying to empty due to a leak. 15% full this morning, drive to work, check, 7% left. So went out at lunchtime, and after work gave it a very spirited ride home. When I get home, still running, although gauge needle hard against the endstop (marked 5%).  Took it out for another blast for about 10m. Still running. Leave it idling on drive whilst I tech2 the MV6, and try to resolve a diagnostics problem with MV6. The Elite is still running.

Locked it up, gave up, walked in.

A valve, I hope  ::) (Ahh, relates to your post about how they're sealed, all falling into place now) :y

Worried about the fill stop too... I wonder if it's worth removing that too :-/ :-/ :-/ Nah... But don't forget to rotate the tank slightly and fully tighten the straps too ;) ;)

Tank tweaked and tightened (later through necessity ::)).  Need to test how far tank fills again.

I certainly would not be running it out of petrol by driving it? if its got to come out then it wont weigh much now, not worth the hassle of sucking a load of crap into the lines and filters etc?

You still faffin around getting that poxy V6 to run on gas? The joys of 4pot, simple install, no lag!

It runs fine on LPG. Very well.

The problem is, it uses LPG even when its turned off ::)

Even though your plenty tall enough to reach the stop, the pedal does have to be pressed to get the lag. Ie, somewhere above tick over.  :P.  ;)

The argument of course could be that the 4pot has no power to create lag  ::)

When i get my Monaro/VXR8 we will see who will have 3/4 of an engine  :P ;D ;D  :D

I wouldn't refer to any omega manual box as proper... But of course it does as you control the injector timings with your right foot, and it's much slower to change than an auto, which cuts injector times to limit the torque on change ;) ;)

thats why I always like a manual, as I control how fast/slow the change is, and most importantly it changes gear, when I want it to!

VXR8 manual with LPG?  :D

And as for resting your arm... Both Hands should be on the wheel ;) ;)

Seconded. I would be trying to take some of the travel out of the stick, and remove some of the sponginess, if I had a manual Omega.

Then again, I'm used to the Westfield and the MX-5 which both have short throw and very little slack in the gearchange. A manual omega feels like stirring porridge in comparison. ;D

maybe i'm just used to it now, I did prefer the much shorter shift in my old Mondeo. But i'd still have any manual over an auto!

I managed to run mine out at last. Going sideways between Silverstone and Wappenham  >:(

Anyway, get it home, it kept switching back to petrol immediately on idle, so thats as empty as I could get it.

Undone the polyflex connection at the back, not even a hiss. Undone the valve from the tank (only in 3 turns :o), only a tiny hiss (and I mean tiny).  So the pickup can't be far out ;D

Cleaned up threads, PTFE and liquid sealent, on 4 turns (couldn't get 5 - managed 4.5, but had to wind back half a turn).  Leaving to fully cure until tomorrow night or Sat morning.

Fingers crossed.

Hmm... Tricky one that. Id didn't start leaking until it was full before :-/ :-/ But I'd be wanting to start with less than a full tank this time ::) ::)

When you do fill it, keep an eye on the pump in case the shut off doesn't cut in like before ;) ;)

Tempted to put just a little in, check, then perhaps half fill it, check again, then fill to 70% on gauage, check, then let it run out again, and fill to full or 65l, and adjust tank as reqd

Sound like a superplan?

Popped 10l in the tank, no sign of leak in the gas tight box :D :D, so now need to add a bit more. Might pop it straight up to 65l.

The downside, is both Mrs TheBoy and I are convinced there is a leak from front end, we both reckon around the 1/3/5 bank, though it could be from vap/filters, anywhere really.  Don't think its 2/4/6 bank. Can't seem to pinpoint further though - nothing seems to be visibly leaking, and the shitfix leak detector is as much use as a used johnny smeared in dogshit.

We both smelt it it bonnet open. Smell seems to go when on petrol, and I reckon return after a few seconds of running on *any* lpg injector, making me think:

liquid filter
evap
gas filters
injector blocks
hoses

After the faff with the tank valve I think I'd be looking around the liquid phase filter :-/ check the bowl on it hasn't worked a little loose with all the trial fit/re-fit, remove, fit again ;)

Can't see it being a vapour phase leak with how tight the hoses were

After having another sniff, I'm wondering about injector block.

LPG gas is heavier than air, isn't it (though with the heat in engine bay, who knows  :-/)

Would you see LPG vapout leaks? Or liquid leaks?
Title: Re: TheBoy's magic fuel tank...
Post by: Lazydocker on 16 April 2011, 10:07:31
Unlikey to be a big enough leak to be visible TBH. Injector block could be possible... The 1,3,5 block was fitted "out of the box" except for the nozzles... Perhaps the large inlet/blanking plug isn't sealing properly :-/
Title: Re: TheBoy's magic fuel tank...
Post by: TheBoy on 16 April 2011, 11:51:16
I reckon it's injector block. Tightened nozzles, removed and refitted blank plug, loosened and retightened feed pipe. Still same.

Odour comes from that area as soon as switchover to gas

Odour comes from that area as soon as switchover to gas

Strange... Definitely no leaks when we calibrated it last weekend... I checked all of the front end thoroughly after the leaking tank valve knocked my confidence a little :-[ :-[

Can only suggest a bit of very soapy water (instead of the crappy leak detector spray) around the joints and check the pipes (including the injector pipes) for any sign of a leak :-/ :-/

I reckon it's injector block. Tightened nozzles, removed and refitted blank plug, loosened and retightened feed pipe. Still same.

Don't know your system .. but could you unplug each gas injector in turn and see if it is just one feed from the injector to the head ??

I know this would cause a missfire on each in turn .. but might narrow the search down ???

I expect the leak, and very small it must be, is in the feed to the injector block... I would expect there to be some misfire symptoms if it was after the injector :-/ :-/

Mind you... He could use the software to switch off the injectors on that block to see if that eliminates it ;) ;) If it does then we know that it's the injector pipes leaking, not the feed to the block :y

My icecream man thinks I've died - 2 days running he's stopped at end of my drive, and I've resisted...

Bugger, can't get it booked in for certification until after the Easter and subsequent bank holiday periods.

Still, will give me time to sort out the calibration, thats currently sending the trims in a tizz

It had crept up to 1.2, I've dragged it back down to 1.06 now.
