Fed up with Nortons NOt working. So, what do YOU use/recommend?
-
Having used Norton for years, have finally decided that its too expensive and bloatware. Have been using AVG free for the past 6 months with the additional of fortnightly runs of Ad Aware and Spybot. Currently using basic XP firewall but Zonealarm free is a good add on. Everything has been trouble free for 6 months.

Hi Fin
I have been using AVG Free for years on all my computers with no problem.. :y
http://free.grisoft.com/
-
I too got fed up of norton, to the point of ripping it out mid subscription.
It missed a fair few viruses.
My day to day AV is AVG Free again, found it much more responsive and reliable.
Did like Kaspersky as well, but found that caused me some big slowdowns.
If I suspect something it hasnt picked up, I also use the free online scanners from the likes of Kaspersky of mcafee as a double check.
-
We use McAfee at work which seems to do the job, but on my personal laptop I use Kaspersky as recommended by son Greg who's well up on all things IT :y
-
I personally don't bother at work or home.
I use regular spyware trawls, firewalls and the email server at work is virus protected.
At home any suspisious emails are just deleted.
Only ever got one virus and that was during a reinstall while getting zonealarm and it was that one which shut down the PC when you didn't want to. luckily I already knew about it and safe mode with hijackthis soon sorted it!!!!
I do an only scan every month or so!

Oh boy, thats not good :o
How do you know you don't have a virus if you do not run AV software?
Remember, virus' (and they are not spyware, so won't be picked up by spyware tools) can be embedded in web pages, or even through direct port access (depending on how good your (hopefully hardware) firewall is). Many popular sites have embedded virus' in at some point due to unpatched applications.

McAfee VirusScan for me.
-
Hi Fin, I used AVG, (free version) have done for years, never had any problems with it. Free basic version can be downloaded from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 :y
-
I have virus scanned and it is clean - just that the free one with my ISP is a bit pants (Norton) AntiVir had update problems so I just stop them getting in instead!

Only way you can stop them without AV software is disconnect PC from outside world. O/G tcp 80 is enough ;)

Hi use AVG and AVIR together i`ve had no problems, or just ditch windows and use linux like Unbuntu.
or fing a close friend and use there`s LOL
-
For me it is AVG, I am so impressed with it I may well go to the full pro version.
I also use Ad Aware SE & Spybot S&D. Every so oftern I run Hijack this just to be doubly sure.
Oh and I have a hardware firewall on my router and windows firewall... ::)

Ahh, the old 'Linux is immune' danger. There are viruses for Linux, you still need AV software. In the same way Linux has security flaws so needs constant patching.
Do not for one minute think Linux is secure!

Sounds good, esp if the firewall on the router is a proper firewall, and not just a simple NAT device :)
-
I use AVG and recommend it to anyone, vista gets a little upset by it and strangely by Defender too??
All the pc's here run AVG and have no problems and windows defender for spyware. No problems with either and
more importantly, both free and effective. Plus hardware firewall on router and the standard windows firewall setup, works fine.
There is nothing I can say to those using the bloatware that is norton, get rid of asap, piece of crap!
And before those using the various flavours of Linus, BSD and OS10 or whatever apple pushes these days, you most definately are
not immune, there are some viruses in the wild and no excuse NOT to have any protection. ::)

Adaware is lavasoft, free version limited, but works. Google the others will find them.
