I am doing a bit more trading lately as a hobby/ beer token generator and my insurance company are getting a bit tetchy about me adding cars for a week or so and my latest quote is a joke so I have looked at a couple of sites offering part time trade cover.
What I can't fathom is can these/do these cover your everyday vehicle? also do you need to be Vat registred etc? and roughly what do these policies cost, i'm only looking at covering cars worth 5 grand max and wouldn't have more than 2 on the go at any one time.
Reccomendations welcome by the way for decent firms/brokers :y

A neighbour has trade insurance that allows him to specify up to 3 personal vehicles that are covered fully comp.
I'll catch up with him in a day or two and find out who he's covered with and let you know.

Yes, they cover your private vehicle.
No, you don't need to be registered for VAT.
My Motor Trade policy was roughly the same cost as my regular insurance policy, around five hundred squid.

Look into fleet insurance, i know a few guys who do it out there home, and have fleet insurance over trade! WHY? i dont know! :( .But as your looking around might be worth a look... :y

Trade Insurance is what you need for Part Time trading / repairs etc.
Tradex and Tradwise are the one the main ones but you will need to go through a broker and get a so called telephone interview / quote, hunt around as they can vary even though you'll end up with the same insurance company.
Dont mention anything do with scrap or breaking cars unless thats what you mainly do. they will expect you to turnover at least 10 cars a year, or you will not be considered a Trader. You will need to keep records of each Car you deal with and any vehicle in your hands for more than a few weeks needs to go on thier MID.
I pay around £550 full com with Tradewise, and it covers me for a couple of my own vehicles and my own Business which is separate to my part time vehicle trading up to a value of £5000 claim.
Down side is no windscreen cover which is small price to pay when your getting all your vehicles covered.
Chris.

Cheers for the replies, got a couple of quotes , cheapest was £1200 fully comp so just renewed my normal policy for now but will look into it in more depth and swap to it when I get a decent quote :y

reckon there is any chance of me being able to get a decently priced trade policy at 22?
I've always been good at buying and selling cars for a profit. dont think i've ever lost money on the 13 cars I've owned.
Always wanted to do a bit of trading, just not sure how to go about it to be honest.
I have a sneaky feeling that it may be extortionate for someone my age?

My current Trade policy for this year came to £4991, down from £6000 last year. For me that's fully comprehensive with unlimited engine capacity and a high value vehicle cover.
If you limit yourself to 1400cc it is much cheaper, but for me that's no use as all of my vehicles are way over that.
If you require any greater detail, PM and I'd be happy to help.

YIKES! :o
Actually... come to think of it, its not that bad considering your age.
Hmm... I wonder what it would be in my case - 23 and without the high value cover... ::)
-
It is a lot of money, but worth every penny to me. Without high value cover, and say a limit of 3.0 it would be cheaper, and considering your 2 years older than me it's feasable it'd be around the £1700 mark.

I have a traders policy through stavely head brokers.
I have myself, my father in law and my brother all fully comp, no limit on vehicles( personal too) no restrictions such as modded or imports value of 7.5k trade, liability cover and demo cover just under 1k a year.

Is that your only insurance policy then? And they allow you to use anything as your personal car? ::)
