Title: How many migs are there?
Post by: VR4Dave on 15 June 2011, 16:28:04
May be a daft question / or may have been asked and answered.
How many were sold in this country and how many do people estimate are left on the road?

Just curious as cars that were in abundance suddenly seem to become very rare.

some models, for example 3.2 Elite estates are quite rare, someone posted up numbers a while ago

I remember cars from the late 80's and early 90's that just seemed to disappear very quickly. Such as escorts, orions sierras etc.
Wonder how long omega's have?
Maybe as they are such a good motor and a bit of a cult following they'll hang around a bit.

Ford shite, inbuilt self destruction, if the rust doesn't kill them, the engines do

I think from the figures posted last year there were just over 1000 3.0 elite auto saloons left on the road, god knows how many a year later, EP and Daz must have done a good few in between them

That's why you see dozens of mk2/3 Cavaliers, Mk1/2 Astras, early Novas and Carltons/Senators every day.

Don't you?

Hell, early Vectras, Mondeos, Mk3 Golfs etc are all nearly 20 years old, worth less than £1K and so are simply surviving by the skin of their teeth. Lets face it, a £400 clutch job will kill a decent Mondeo(and they don't even have a DMF!), and modern cars are getting worse in that regard.
Just imagine what the need for replacement common rail injectors are going to do a car's survivability very soon. Actually, thinking about it, that time is here now; I've picked up a number of 4/5 year old VWs that have already needed more than one(at easy 4 figure repair bills), and are showing the same symptoms again.

I never said Vauxhalls were any better.  My views on a lot of Vauxhalls are well known here ;D.  Vauxhalls were blighted with rust issues, and underpowered engines, just not to the same extent ;D

A 1980s Ford will disintegrate in the wind quicker than a joyrider could nick an Mk II Astra ;D

I actually don't remember the last time i saw one (which is a good thing  :) ;D)
I owned a C reg 1.6 GL diesel many years ago :( It wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, but it did 70MPG :)
One of the crappiest cars i've owned & i hope it''s long dead  :y

The ford examples I used were just that examples, although TB you seem to have a passionate dislike  ;D
When I was a teenager and first started driving ('93) I had a couple of minis (I know rust well too), which were everywhere.
Then all of a sudden you realise they just aren't about anymore.
Are the omegas likely to hang around longer?

Hey, don't knock the orion  >:(. I had a 1.6 injection ghia black with pepper pot wheels and as a 19yr old it was a great pulling machine  :y
I really wanted a bmw 325i but could not afford insurance on one, as I also had a suzuki 600 bandit and my own house and mortgage! (and 2 jobs!)

Every Ford I've ever owned personally, or been responsible for (company vehicles), of which there are many, the only ones I ever rated were a K reg tranny (brilliant van, so much road presence, the traffic parts for you) and an R reg Fifi.  Mind you, both them had shite engines ;D

Want is surprising, I've never had a duff Rover. Every one has been comfortable, quick (for what it was), reliable and rust free.  Must have been a good boy in a previous life ;D

Oh - since you mentioned Rovers.. I saw an old shape (square) 214Si the other day.. I thought they were all long gone, but apparently not!

TB - how do you copy parts of a previous post, so you can repond easily?

Agree with most of those points, especially the facelifts bit. I had 2 prefacelifts when before the facelifts came out and hated the facelift, but now I prefer the facelift in estate version but prefer the preface in saloon.
If I didn't need an estate I'd love a decent preface saloon.

Oh my Ital wasn't that bad!

..hang on.. are we talking about 1.3 or 1.7?

There's an Austin Maxi I pass on my way to work every day. Not tidy enough to be a collector's car but not a single bit of tin worm evident, and it is clearly still possible to select some of the gears, which was a tall order when they were new. :o

I just can't figure out how it's survived.  :-/

Speaking of old BL cars..

When I was over in Tokyo I saw two lovingly restored (or preserved) BL cars, one in the middle of being polished & waxed and another parked up near Toyko Tower.

One was a Riley Elf:

And the other an Austin Princess!

Ohh, the joys of Ital suspension! You haven't lived until you've experienced it. ;D

Really solid leaf springs and live axle at the rear with really solid shock absorbers. You could load the boot of my estate up with pi$$ed students and the ride height didn't alter one bit. ;D

The front end was an abortion retrieved from the Morris Minor parts bin. Twin lever arm setup, the bottom of which attached to a longitudinal torsion bar which was some sort of excuse for not putting a proper spring in place. Bottom trunnions were a service item. Once every oil change, roughly. ;D Top lever arm formed a crude shock absorber which was probably Ok when it was on a car 1/2 the weight but offered no noticeable damping.

They obviously thought about an anti-roll bar because there were holes where it should have been mounted but obviously they decided the handling wasn't dire enough with that fitted so the bean counters saved a few quid instead.

Tyres were 155/70 IIRC. 8-)

Result?

Horrendous levels of body roll. I gave up fitting mud flaps because I kept having to cut them down to stop them dragging on the ground going round corners.

If the body roll didn't warn you off and you pressed harder, dreadful understeer set in, which, with the application of a little power, snapped into oversteer (remember that hard rear end?) which the front end didn't have enough authority to control.

Had mine been a 1.3 it probably wouldn't have mattered, because to reach the heady speeds at which the above became apparent would have taken forever, but the 1.7 was actually quite sprightly in a straight line with about 85 BHP, IIRC. it just encouraged you to pile into corners at speeds at which the chassis didn't have a hope of doing anything other than causing you to void yourself in terror.

Notice how vividly I recall the above despite not having driven one since about 1993. Some scars never heal. :o

Which I needed to on several occasions, including watching my front wheel beat me to a corner, and having the engine drop out.  Oh and a high speed rear blow-out which, as you rightly point out, the front couldn't do much to help.

In fairness, before it opened, I used to blast up and down the M40 in it for work (much to annoyance of the construction people), it was good for a ton...  ....but then mine was lightened, having 5yrs of tinworm...

Mine once achieved 115MPH on the M3, 8-) although it might have been a downhill section. ::) It actually had very good midrange acceleration, being 4 speed. I dread to think how many revs it was doing at 115 but, despite a particularly annoying oil leak, the engine proved to be bomb proof. Unlike the bodywork.

ADO16 Princess are REALLY popular in Japan for some reason.

Thinking about it, a small, 4 seater with a proper luxury car interior on effectively Mini running gear explains it quite well. Makes a Fiesta look big. My sister's Morris 1300(same car without the posh trim and grille) gives 40mpg around town and is quite happy on the motorway too. It is due some restoration this year, I've done the sills(first welding the car had), wings, front panel and doorskins should happen this autumn!

NOOO how dare you! lol
i had a belmont 1.8glsi when i was 17 was sooo much fun and quicker then my mates onions and xr2's loved it so much i got another one 3 years ago! they are mega rare now in that spec, mine was saved at the 11th hour £150 with tax and mot, 65k miles, and it hasnt failed a mot yet, even tho the last expired xmas lol

so many 80s cars have gone, i love any thing retro, iirc there is less then 1000 mk2 cavaliers left and i think its single numbers for mine, early spec 1600GLS.
there are definatly a lot more fords of that era left, ive never been a fan just look on ebay! some getting silly money too.

Im constantly changing cars (not a trader i just like to) and an omega has been on the list for ages, ive noticed how little are left now already, lots went to the scrappage schem for korean tin boxes.
Seen many other newer cars 7-8 years old ready for breaking, and anything 15 years old worth less then a grand is a scrapper for many smaller jobs, clutches, suspensions.
