Title: Spring Assistors
Post by: deltaman on 22 June 2011, 17:53:45
I tow a caravan with my 2.2, when loaded the rear drops very low causing the jockey wheel on the caravan to catch the road on an uneven surface.
I have had new springs fitted and new shocks, I have checked the nose weight of the loaded van and it is just under the recomended figure of 75kgs.
My next thought was to fit spring assistors, has anyone any experiance of having done this, I was concerned about the ride after fitting

Yep, we have spring assistors fitted to our DTi Estate (also has new shocks and springs as the 130K originals were a little tired). Seems to help maintain a nice level ride with the caravan attached but I generally take the jockey wheel off completely when towing as it's one less thing to fall off!  ::)

Ride quality in the car is unaltered when you aren't towing.

Perhaps we should swap springs, mine is so high in the air it looks daft.... ::) ::) ::)

Deltaman. Couple of things.

Buy a nose weight gauge. Money well spent. The caravan we had was nose weight of 75Kg or more. The saloon is max of 75Kg. Towsure or similar.

I have spring assistors fitted now andf it doesn't seem to affect the ride unladen. Laden with bags of cement, fertiliser etc it is good.

The only concern I have is that they may cause more load on the "not locked by rubber" parts of the coil spring and cause them to fail prematurely. I haven't any evidence to back that up though.

I got some Monroe shocks from Monroeshop.co.uk a while ago. They were cheaper than ebay iirc. They work well. As said.

Thanks all for your replies, we have a nose weight gauge so we are ok with the loading, having had new springs and shocks fitted we will have a go with the assistors and see what happens, just spoilt I guess having towed with a 4x4 for many years.
