1.8 K series Rover with an existing suspect HG / overheating issue. Ran low on oil, engine got very hot, smoked a lot, and was and very tappety. Switched off, and got towed home.
I've had a look with the engine stone cold. With the oil topped up (it really was low :-X ) I fired it up - and, she runs fine on all 4 pots.
No nasty noises, smooth idle.
The only problem is - the amount of smoke it's pushing out the back is crazy.
Could this be oil getting into the bore(s) via a failed HG? Or, especially given it got very hot, is it more likely to be a ring?
The oil light never came on, and there are no knocks, so hopefully the bottom end might have survived?
I'd appreciate some advice from someone in the know in these engines :y

Is the smoke blue?

Is the smoke blue?
It's more grey than blue really Pete, but it absolutely stinks of oil.. :-/

If its consuming oil at quite a rate then its likely to be rings which possibly also means bores.
Get a compression test done as a starter.
Biggest issue you have is that the only half decent engine in the 75 is the BMW diesel.

I have had a 1.6 K series get so hot that a piston partially melted and also cracked the liner, ended up doing new pistons and liners and recon head(back in the day when the 45 was still worth a few quid :-X)

I take it valve guides aren't a possibility?
