Title: Gayboy Gixer did good
Post by: TheBoy on 25 June 2011, 20:44:19
As regular members know, I have tried twice toe repalce my rear springs recently, and failed.

So, popped over to chrisgixer's, we lower the diff, no different to what I had done, and the bloody springs fall out :o

To say I felt a prat is an understatement  :-[

When I changed them on my old prefacelift about 3 years ago they fought me all the way. I had a hell of a job getting them out. When I removed the ones from the breaker about a month ago  I went through the procedure and they just fell out.
Cars eh ! ::)

Yeah, I've done a fair few, never really had an issue before this car, except with AA's, but he has heavy duty springs, and spring assisters.

Don't know who this Gay boy bloke is. But I'd like to thank, fist off, Andy Vxlv6 for a lot of very thorough loom work, and today, TB for a fairly huge chunk of work towards completing said ice project.

This includes;
Relocating Telematics to boot to go with my 2015
Traffic master and loom integration
Nokia handsfree car kit.
And, to be completed, Harmen Uphill Garden iPod emulator.

Mixer tbc.
Stock glove box to refit.
Gay pod thingy almost done.

As usual in my ignorance I hadn't fully appreciated the level of work and axpertise involved in all this. Involved every corner of the car interior being removed, some head lining, both kick panels, under both front foot wells, centre dash panel and switches out, head unit out, cage out(bastid rather thing that is) hiding several large plugs boxes and extra bits outside the edge of the plastic cage that holds the metal cage as there simply isn't room otherwise,,found a climate sensor loose which explaned it's recent random behavior, both sill trims to an extent, rear side bolsters, top brake light panel and aerial on the roof only to eventually find the conectors tucked out the way... At which point it all fell into place. Telematics connected fully, traffic master fitted, put it all back together and it all works perfectly, that's fitted so far.

Add that lot to new shocks, springs and diff bushes on the silver bullit, and I have to say that's a bloody good days work. :y

Thanks Andy and TB today. Top work.

Although I have to say, I think I got my "money's worth" today. Certainly the easy end of the bargain as TB has done all this stuff before ha saved me days of work and agro I could not have done otherwise.  :-[

Brilliant birthday present as well. Fantastic job.  :y

TB did say at various points, he wants to have mine and Andys Babies.  :(.  ;D. Although there was a lot if swearing as well. Pmsl  ;D

You may have noticed, we did have a couple of 'Oh Shit' moments.  Had it have been my car, I would have been worried :P

VXL V6 did a brilliant job, perfect length :y.  I had had visions of having to extend the loom down the side of the car, as I know how hard it is to judge lengths like that, esp when working with only a limited amount of wire. Only query, which VXL V6 mentioned when he handed over loom, is the Mic wiring. I've wired all 3 through the loom, so we have all options, but I reckon we can just move a pin at Telematics end :y

I meant to take the Homo-Kardon unit away to fix the display wiring. Forgot  :-[ - it was getting late, and I was getting tired.  I reckon we can sort that, though, although the heatshrink will show due to how close it is to display. Unless we can get display apart.

A couple of open Q's to anyone about the Homo-Kardon:
1) Anyone know how the display comes apart
2) Anyone know the power wiring for main unit - Black, Red, Yellow. I assume 0v, 12v and switched 12v, in that order

Not sure the exact model but it's very similar to this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140524037302
If anyone has experience with them.

So I did. These hold the rear of the subframe to the chassis. Or did once.
Bar a small area, one was completely detached. (http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p326/chrisgixer/45d257f7.jpg)

Btw, I think you should have kept the bushes to "show" your Mot man next time he gets cocky. I spotted these failing when we lpg'd it, what, 18 months ago?

Maybe he should be made to hang one from HIS rear view mirror as penance!   >:(.

The back end is an awful lot tighter now. Esp as I've done up the wheel bolts as well ;D

Sits a little high, though, IMHO.  Which probably shows how use I'd gotten to its sagging ass.

It's nicely balanced as is, after fixing the omission we both forgot. Underpants survived in tact.

So, whats the chance that you have been trying to change rear springs with the handbrake on and park engaged......
Title: Re: Gayboy Gixer did good
Post by: feeutfo on 29 June 2011, 16:00:52
As it happens both where engaged when we did the work. I parked it, so as to give best acess to the rear on my drive, it was in park. I would not normally apply the hand brake but I made a very deliberate point of doing so....  given the owner and fear of a bollocking  :-X

I did comment at the time, are you sure this isn't just a ploy to get someone else to do the work for you? (and visit my house, you know what he,s like)

Reason I ask is that if you lock the wheels then the trailing arms dont dro. Similarly, you can get a surprise when fitting lowering springs and finding the rear end high when you drop it back down if the handbrake is applied.

Having it in park locks the prop and does a similar thing.  :y

Ah, yes, about that. Still going, but there's a problem with getting time off. Sadly I'm on lates, so can't leave work until 10pm on Friday.

Only hope is that we're quiet on the day and I can leave early or play it by ear, so to speak.

I need to speak with LF, and see if they are ok with us arriving early hours. Which is a bit unfair. May have to leave it until early sat morning. :'(

One about 2m off M6 at Morrisons in Leyland, or if you can make to A66, the Total about 1m off the M6 on the A66 sells it (or did last year)

Uphill garden thing is breaked btw. I did a good job repairing the wires, took the back off, unplugged the cable from the board, cut out the damaged section, re soldered. Screen now works.

Only to reveal a fault code and " please wait " message, believed to be a faulty control knob issue according to some web sites.

So one less job to do there.  :'(

unless I can source another from somewhere.

For me, I should be able to make Brakkers to Penrith/A66 station on one tank if its not stop/start all the way.  The last tank on the MV6 was only 260m

Nothing obvious, no kinks to speak of, it does light up. But one of the four LEDs is dim. Other than that...

Control box looks ok although theres some sort of heat sink thing thats a bit burnt. Presume it's the controller knob. :-/

Fuse had blown as you said though, could the screen cable fault cause that?

Thank you. At one point it would have needed to be a 24 hour. But should be able to leave earlier now.

I'll look into it more when I have a better idea what time we're leaving.

I'm almost disappointed it's not going to be later departure, as the roads will be quieter then...  :-X
