can anyone tell me what difficulty level it is in doing the cambelt on my sons vehicle and what sort of cost it would be to have it done. ive noticed the space is very small to work in

cambelt not hard to do but beware that bottom cam sprocket is free spinning(not keyed to crank) so you will need the locking kit :y

My 8 valve diseasal Astra's cam is like this. Just how much can a company save by doing it like this? It's a barmy idea to me, why can't they key them together & put a timing mark on? I just left them alone when I refitted the cam belt to mine.

i wont do it myself but just wanted a rough idea as i it needs doing as the belt looks pretty naff. it hasnt been done since since car is new by going by the mileage. says on fiestas site every 100k. looks like i'll probably have to pay for it as well

My 8 valve diseasal Astra's cam is like this. Just how much can a company save by doing it like this? It's a barmy idea to me, why can't they key them together & put a timing mark on? I just left them alone when I refitted the cam belt to mine.
On the Zetecs it's done to give finer setting of the cam timing. A bit like the eccentric rollers on the V6. I too find it disconcerting (so put dowelled vernier pulleys on mine) but they don't appear to cause problems.

But if the manufacturer set the cams/pulleys correct & then keyed them, you can't get better than correct! ;), a bit like the later 2.6 & 3.2 cars losing an eccentric, if it's correct, then it's correct! :y :y
