Title: Ta Ta Miggy, Hello CockMobile
Post by: Broomies Mate on 09 July 2011, 18:28:35
As some of you may know, I've been getting a little bored of the Omega (Had 2 for the last couple of years) and fancy something different.

Well, I have taken other similarly sized cars for test-drives and didn't find anything that I liked.

Yesterday, a friend of mine offered me a car for such little money, I couldn't refuse.  Basically, the car cost me nothing..... we just swapped keys.

Bearing in mind my Omega was starting to suffer with Wishbones, one section of exhaust (mid section) was in need of replacing and the usual rust at the top edges of the doors was becoming more noticable.

So, I took the plunge and swapped with this; (sorry for pic quality, crap camera phone)

It's a 535i M Sport apparently so the logbook says.  Has a lovely V8 engine with superb power delivery... not quite as 'punchy' as the Omega V6 at low revs, but certainly pulls well once it's going and the sound it makes is awesome.  The seats are nowhere near as 'comfortable' as the Omega, but all-in-all, I have enjoyed thrashing it around the Bristol Ring-Road and Country B Roads today.

A couple of small issues to address though, the Temperature UP button on the Passenger side is missing and the pixels on the OBC (the one by the dash clocks) are all to cock, just a replacement cable required so I'm told.  Other than that, it is quite peachy for the age.  124k miles, BMW History up until 99k. 6 Months TAX and MOT was done a week ago with no Advisories.

I wanted a 7 Series, but nothing I could find was either cheap enough, or in good enough condition.  I hope I dont regret taking this 5 Series on, but only time will tell.

So, how big of a cock am I?
Opinions on things to look out for?

I agree, I wouldn't have said no either, although I can't even afford the petrol on mine, never mind a 3.5 V8  :o

Very nice though  :y

Currently I'm achieving 8mpg MORE from this than the 3.0 V6 Omega, and I've not been light footed with it today either!  :-/

I've always liked the E39, especially the M Sport. There are still plenty of tidy examples about.  :y
Nice motor.  :y :y

Thanks for all your comments.

This is puzzling me a bit.  Apart from having very stiff suspension (stiffer than the 530SE I drove a couple of weeks ago for sure), the 'M' badge on the Steering wheel and the reference to it on the V5, there is nothing to suggest this is an 'M Sport' BMW.  It has 16" wheels, no lip soiler or front splitter etc etc.  The seats are harder than the 530SE I drove too.

So, is this an 'M Sport' model, or is it standard?  Either way I dont care, just dont want to look like a cock when I'm sipping Gin & Tonic at the local Gay Bar (I do afterall own a BMW)  ;D

If it was an M it would have a small blue M betweem the rev counter and speedo about the size of a old half pence .:y
Its a pitty your never said you were looking for a 7 series my mates got a 750 (5.7 v12) sitting on his drive for sale.
And all the toys as well :D

Thats just the M5 (The big bugger) though, isn't it?  :-/

EDIT: And I'd love a 750, but unfortunately I couldn't afford to insure it. This bloody thing is Group 18.  ;D

I think the e39 is the one of the best looking beemers ever made, certainly prettier than the e60/61,if someone would offer me a nice e39 530D I'd be in there  :y

Nice car.. best looking model on all 5 series imo..

as its a v8, will be a joy to drive but maintenance and consumption will be bit higher than miggies but more suitable for daily usage than the 7 series..

v8 engines are more sensitive for maintenance than the inline 6 models.. so keep some money aside for surprises imo..

Enjoy :y

Very nice motor mate [smiley=thumbsup.gif],they can suffer from suspension issues on the front as thats a big heavy lump up there, but when i had my 740 before the Omega, parts from the likes of GSF are quite reasonable, just drive and enjoy i,d have another 7 or 5 series in a flash

BMW's are unknown to me.  I briefly had a 1994 320i when I was a lad, but..........

Just sat in the back seat (I never get into the back seat of my car unless I'm in a country lane with SWMBO  ;D) And christ alive.........

There is a little lever on each side which turns each seat into a childs booster seat.

Completely useless as I dont have children, but thats yet another nifty little thing that I was amazed at.  :D

I think I need a new hobby!  ;D

when you get bored and want to swap back to an Omega - I'll be waiting.....!

by the way, do you still want that Senator stuff ? the car in question will be finally coming apart this week.

I did test drive a 535 few years back, very nice. Felt noticeably smaller than Omega, particularly wing mirrors. Mind you facelift Omega ones are massive!

Lot of car for the money, and cheaper than the 540's which tend to hold more value.

540 manuals are very precious and rare..  but tiptronics are relatively cheap here..  interesting buyer behaviour :-/

I miss the gadgetry in the Omega, especially the electric seats (can be fitted to the BMW though).  If it werent for the noise this BMW makes, I would pass it on in a heart-beat.

The Senator has been stripped and sent to Vx Heaven unfortunately.  Took the plastic sill caps off to find, well, nothing but a pile of brown dust.  :( By-the-way, you've got a bloody good memory, I'd forgotten all about that!  ;D

I agree, inside the cabin does feel smaller and the mirrors are pish.  Parked next to my mate F/L Mig, they are exactly the same length and width (by eye).  Apparently, the 540 is THE car to have.... considerably more power with very little difference in economy.  Probably why it is priced so differently in the market  :y

Handsome?  Crikey, I wouldn't look Handsome in a Zonda.  I have a face only a Mother could love, and she hates me!  ;D

I've signed up to the 'BMW5' Forum.  Seem friendly enough, getting a lot of positive comments and the help there seems to be very good.  I'm a member of a lot of Automotive related Forums, and hand on heart, OOF is by FAR the most friendly, the most user-friendly and the most helpful forum out there.  That's why I wont be leaving for a good long while.

Whilst at the moment I'm very much enjoying the 5 Series (it's something new to play with), if the RIGHT 3.0/3.2 Elite with all the Toys came along, I probably couldnt say no.  :y
