Although expected, I don't think any UK price cuts have been announced yet, unlike US. TBH, if Sony think a 20% cut will stimulate demand, I think they need a rethink...

Have around £80 in our PS3 fund, all from surveys and stuff
-
I have enough £ in my 'toys' fund for a PS3. Its just I don't want one...
-
I with Dave - Gran Turismo :y
-
PGR3 on 360 is quite good - well the downloaded demo is, I don't own any 360 games as I do not play games on it.

We're interested in the Wii (pun not intended, maybe it is, no scratch that). Need to look at the games more first. Also want 360 after Halo comes out and the package deals get reasonable, maybe after Xmas.
Zero interest in PS3 at any price.

Alas, MS are unlikely to move much on price before Xmas - in its home country, its still best selling console. I think MS are more than happy with its financial performance (faults aside), except Japan.

I'm happy with the prices now, just expect the package prices to go back up initially with Halo. If same price as now with Halo as 1 of the 3 games, then maybe I'll have one before Xmas! :y

i still have a couple of 360 games not even played yet had for a couple of months, is Halo 3 out now then on 360?

Slightly off topic and I apologise
The VCR format war was Sony with Betamax, Phillips with V2000 and JVC with VHS. In order of quality V2000 was best (with the cassette you could turn over) followed closely by Betamax and, some way down the line, was VHS with the worst quality.
As V2000 never took off Betamax was the best quality home VCR available at the time. Betamax lost the war as we all know and we had to wait for Super VHS before the quality of VHS improved.
With DVD recorders being priced lower and lower, video cassette is now becoming out of date. Still use my three Panasonic machines though.

I always thought for picture wuality Beta was best, well it had the fastest recording speed due to a larger head diameter.
62 for noddy
65 for V2000
74.5 for Beta
Found this while searching for the diameters and formats

Oh and bandwidth 2.4 was listed for Vhs - I know that Beta at worst was 2.5 or 2.6 with good quality Sonys (F1 C9 HF100) hitting high 2s and Super Beta getting into the 3s
I have done the testcard recording test and you can definately see the difference between formats.
In the little test I did
Worst to best
Panacronic Vhs
Sanyo VTC6500
Sony SL-F1
Sony SL-HF950
At a later date I head to head compared a SVHS against the 950 and the results were to say it were odd. Due to paper figures you would assume with its higher resolution SVHS would be a lot better, but surprisingly it was not. Yes there was a bit more detail but not that much more, however the colours were in comparison terrible, they were like someone had taken a line drawing and water coloured over the top, low colour detail and not perfectly registered, due to the better colour resolution Super Beta held up better and was actually better for editing with.
Best home tape format for SDTV is DV!
I have recorded DTTV onto DV quite happily

fRom what i recall, my mums b&o v2000 was far better quality than anything else that my schoolmats had. too long ago to be certain though....
sorry for poor typing, type to do this on a very rough train :(

So what do you use it for????
I still have an original Xbox with XBMC on it, i use it for DivX movies and as Music centre, have it on the Wireless system, so ican get on the internet with it too, Have stuck a 320gb hard disk in it, and a 320gb external on the laptop with all my films and albums on it, cant beat it.
Does Xbox 360 do something similar, been watching, will emigrate to it if it does.
Thanks, Mark. :y

Panacronic! Nice.
Very interesting info there Martin and I am not surprised about your findings with SVHS. I clearly remember my disappointment when I got a SVHS deck - although it is a Panacronic so maybe that's why?
I would suspect that the b&o would have been better than what your school mates had - hopefully the rough train journey will be over soon. Should have taken the MV6!
-
So to clear things up.....
MCE Extender is built into xbox 360, yes???
Can it be used on more than one tv??? or just the one the xbox is plugged into??
I know in the us the is a box you can get to go into tv, but not here i dont think cos of pal/ntsc.
Does it work with Vista OK, or is it xp Media Centre??
Thanks, Mark. :y

The best Vhs decks were from Matsushita (JVC & Panasonic), Beta best was Sony, the other companies basically didn't make as good VCRs as these 3 of their formats.
However if you want a VCR to survive a nuclear winter a Sanyo Beta is a good bet!
Funny though that best were the inventors.
-
A mate of mine had a Sony VCR which he was REALLY proud of, until I asked him about frame accurate edits. The Sony was never the same amount of frames on assembly editing whereas all of my Panasonic machines are. Machine 1 roll back three frames, machine 2 is 4 frames and machine 3 is 3 frames.
I did not realise that Matsushita was part of JVC though.
-
the V2000 format was clever, they mounted the heads on piezos so the heads could dynamically track the video stripe. This meant excellent playback even at slow and fast speeds, forward and reverse. And by working out relative reel speeds it could tell you how much time was left on the tape. I still have my Grundig V2000, it was so far ahead of the current VHS decks at the time, yet like a lot of good ideas it died. Life seems to be like that. Mind you I also thought the Atari ST was great !!! ;D ;D ;D
-
just seen on the news that PS3 will not be reduced in price in the uk, it'll stay at £425
not impressed

The 950 allowed frame accurate editing, the edit masters are still quite good too!
I still need to lend you a DVD!!!!

All this just goes to show that consumers are not always right. I had forgotton about the freeze and search facilities. Another great invention that should have had a great deal more success is the minidisk.

Oh yes, that had slipped my mind! It will be nice to see how others edit - plus I like trains as well. At present working on a school journey video and manually cleaning the capstan of my VX2000E. Found a very good guide here http://www.bealecorner.com/trv900/trouble/index.html go to johns guide to camera cleaning for the pics. I hope that this will work for my camera which has exactly the same symptoms at present. May be of use to you?

My Mini DV camera is OK a little bashed but I have used it a lot.
My HVC400P has a knackered tube :( But I have owned it for over 20 years.
I will send a Beta sourced PC edited disc.

Market forces will dictate that.... unless Sony want to be in the wilderness...

Great! Looking forward to it. Regarding postage, I will put stamps to the value of what it cost you to send in the return envelope. That way, you will not have incurred any expense. Alternatively, I will enclose cash - whichever you prefer. Let me know.
Camera appears to be OK now. Thank goodness for that as in the middle of an edit!

they think that reducing it everywhere else in the world will be enough, its down to less then $500 in the states already

Yeah, make a big hoo haa about reducing price in one market and then another about NOT reducing it in another. ::)
How stupid to they think their potential customers are?
Plenty of them sitting on their hands (and their toy budgets) now, I reckon.

You are failing to appreciate the contempt that Sony UK treats its customers with.... ....the trade news says no UK price cut planned. However, as LB66 says, they need to stimulate sales somehow, and currently it won't be via the games.
-
I stand by what I say, a price cut at the beginning of Quarter 4. They have to move a lot of units in the run up to Christmas or they will be dead in the water.
-

The rumour is that they are hoping to sell a lot of PS3 in the run up to christmas on the back of games like GT4 at the current price. Personally, I think they are wrong, and they need to sell it at (even more of?) a loss.
BTW, the US price cuts may not be what it initially seems. They have released one with a bigger drive at the original price, and it seems to be unclear whether the smaller disk one (that reduced in price) will still be marketed for long (or the cynical view I heard was reduce its supply, so parents see the lower price but struggle to obtain, so buy more expensive one after promising to little Johnny)...
-
Yes I have heard about the bigger drive being released but if they try that particular routine they may find their market share dropping even further.
The hope has been that sales will pick up in quarter 4 with the run up to christmas.
From what I gather, the markers are not good. The retailers have some interesting deals in place with Microsoft for the run up to crimbo (some excellent promo packages) which means the X Box 360 price will not reduce noticeably, but you will get more for your money.
Sony, on the other hand have been less certain of their strategy for the rest of the year....
Nintendo, on the other hand, are laughing! They just have to put the units in the shops and away they go!

Yes, after years of playing 2nd fiddle, Nintendo are top dog again. It may not be the technically superior, but it is unique and good fun - something gamer developers and console makers need to remember, fun and gameplay are more important than graphics and game trailers...
