Which diesel car would you recommend for around the 2 or 3 grand mark? Later this year i'm giving my son Scott the MX5. I love it but getting in & out is'nt as easy as it was when i had my first one some 12/13 years ago so i'm going to enjoy it a while longer then grow up....a bit! I fancy a Passat, A4, Xtype Jag but will probably only get a high mile nail for the money so Focus, Pug 406/306 with low miles & history might be more realistic. Quite fancy a volvo but don't know much about them...Sorry but nothing from Vauxhall. I know it'll probably be the dreaded FWD but the point is i need something relaxing & reliable to go to W.Sx in to see Dad on any long weekends i have free so no time for OOF or classic meets. The whole family are far flung, Norfolk, Boston, Woucester, Manchester, Derbyshire & Peak district, Hove. He's either staying with one of us or we're staying with him. This is how it will be till he pops off so sorry for rambling but i need a nice mile muncher.
I'd appreciate any suggestions & good/bad points of said motors. Given i'm after a cruiser auto is ok. Guy.

Mrs Opti briefly owned an X-type Mondeo......a 3.0 SE Auto. Quite frankly it was awful Guy. It had every electrical fault under the sun. Not a proper Jag in my opinion. :-/

Why nothing from Vauxhall Guy? In the model/price bracket you describe, my first choice would be an Astra 1.7 cdti every time! :y
-
yeh, the Astra 1.7 is a good little run about.
The Passat is as dull as ditch water and the A4 just as bad (but smaller and worse handling!) although the 1.9 diesel is a good lump. If going VAG I would be looking at Golf/Seat TBH.

I just don't love them. They're ok but leave me cold, no love or interest. Sorry! :y
-
although I'm no expert for diesels, if I had to buy a diesel, high mileage ones are a definite no no..repairs are costly even in small lumps .. and you pay more at the beginning..
golf diesels worth checking imo..

not quite true my 51 plate mondeo tddi has done 230k and still drives like new
-
Golf/Seat Leon are possibilities. The 130bhp diesel Passats are nippy. Are'nt Seats high ins groups?
-
my 406 Hdi is at 190 k and still going very strong, never uses any oil between changes and still does close to 50mpg all the time and is squeak and rattle free on the road :y
-
There are so many Mondeos around, the prices are low and you should be able to pick a 130bhp for not too much cash! Boring as heck though! Is there an exciting diesel?
-
you could get a nice 3.2 Elite with LPG for that kind of money. ;)

the tdci mondeos are a bit iffy a tddi on the other hand pulls like a train from 1800 rpm when the turbo kicks in mine has been tweaked a little though but still easily get 50 plus mpg on the motorway or the st diesel definately far from boring :y

mondy 2.2 diesel is bloody quick :y
-
Have you thought about something completely different like a Ford SMAX:
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/ford/ford-s-max-2010-road-test/
or for ease of getting in or out and comfortable driving position a Ford CMAX:
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/c-max-2003/
although avoid the CVT auto like the plague as the gearboxes give up at about 50,000 miles and are no longer made, so you have to scrap the car!!! :o :o :o
-
interesting no one mentioned the vectra c diesel, theyre pretty solid motors, seen a few with 200k+ and still driving strong, and you'll have alot of change left! ;)

Mondy vote +1 :y
-
I could live with a Mondy. They drive better than Veccies..(what does'nt?) Do you still need a disc cutter to change the front discs? (Not joking) & are clutch changes still an issue? I'd consider a Diesel Focus. I was hoping for something a bit more interesting than a Ford or VX but a bit pricey.
No rush, we'll see what turns up!

I am begining to think along these lines...... :-/ :-/ :-/

-
Guy, I'd recommend a Volvo S60 D5, they sound good (I mean really good for a diesel), they pull like a train and they have possibly the most comfy seats of any car I've ever had the fortune to be sat in :y Or another Omega, or an E39 5 series :y

I look after one of them for a customer, nice drive but very thirsty driven locally(sub 20mpg) :-/

you must have been lucky...don't they have a lot of injector problems and dual mass fly wheel probs...both with a £800 repair bill

No thats the later engine
-
I'd consider a mondeo, but would have to be the later TDCI engine, the previous one is a dog imho - too flat to carry the heavy car. Worth tolerating the injector problems for. I've seen the earlier, short lived (in Mondeo) diesel screw a flywheel as well, so not entirely sure they are immune.
The 130TDCI won't win any races, but is quick enough and powerful enough not to be frustrating. I find them comfortable enough that Luton to Leuven (wonder why I went there ::)) wasn't a grind, though I did stand up and walk around in the tunnel.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming please & the good & bad points! :y
-
Guy, have a read of this about the Volvo S60, it's much more interesting that a Mondeo or a Pug 406, all the reviews say how good they are and you could easily get a D5 for sub £3k.
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/volvo/s60-2000.aspx?page=2
-
i'd go for a volvo d5 or 530d but think you'd only get around mid 30's mpg.....buy that nice 3.2 thats on ebay get it lpg'd..40 ish mpg equivalent
-
one friend have this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-Megane-1-5dCi-Expression-Red-/110718791727?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item19c75ab02f
not powerful but never had problems with it.. one of the top selling cars here..
-
i had a 99 plate passat 1.9 tdi, unbelievable fuel economy. when i sold it with 241k on the clock (i done 200k of those) i was still getting an average of 55/60mpg
very fast for a diesel as well and looks good. :y :y
only real problem i had was the front arms needed replacing twice, but thats a fair bit of mileage they had trundled over. oh, and make sure the timing belt has been changed. :y
-
The Volly D5 looks good. Also considering the bigger S80/C80? saloon. They do lovely C70 2 door coupe but i think they're only petrol...not sure. I'd love a Passat but not sure i could afford/find a low miler with the punchy engine same as Audi A3/4.
Still got an open mind & in no rush but i love my Vollies & if you get a good'un you can't go far wrong. One of the best cars to crash in as well if things get sticky!!! :y

S80's are just as good with more room, V70's are top notch as well, you can't go wrong with a Volvo, they're very reliable too, a mate of mine has had one since new in 2003, he has never actually replaced a part apart from servicing items :y
-
i had a 740 gle in the 90's did approx 90k miles in it and apart from a gearbox rebuild at about 170k miles never let me down
-
If I was looking to go WWD in a smelly oil burner I'd be looking at a Volvo :y In fact, when I got my saloon I was actually planning to hold on a bit longer and get a D5 Volvo ;)
-

Hi Kate. Never had one but driven a couple & i'm nostagic enough to go & buy it but even with the upgrades & mile muncher it is'nt, i may as well take the Cortina!
Also has it had an engineeres report for the 1275 upgrade & is it registered as such? Insurance problems can arise.
Lovely old bus though as long as you have a grease gun & with that reg plate i'd have to name it sausage!!!! 8-)

Long journeys might be a problem on the back! And the handbrake is next to the drivers door!

Hi Guy,
I'd be very careful of Mk 3 TDci Mondys. They seem very fragile and liable to problems with injectors and DMFs.
I had an 06 2.2 Tdci ST - it was very comfy but got to 60k and then started playing up - as many do.
It's also a very noisy car - lots of road noise from the rear of the car - very noticible and quite tiring on a long journey TBH.
I've been pleasantly surprised by the French Hdi engines as I have a new shape C5 Hdi at work. Very good on fuel, very comfy and very quiet - but probably still a bit ££ as have only been out a couple of years now.
Regards - Rob

Why diesel Guy, doing some bigger miles?

Why diesel Guy, doing some bigger miles?
I guess so... First post below ;)
Guy.

Guess reading posts in full would be better idea :-[
With that kind of miles Guy, you really want a big comfy cruiser.
The 2.5 TD's in the Omega, can go rather well. Especially when chipped back to full BMW spec :y
Guess could try and get a 530d, but its going to be a right nail for that kinda money :(

True, but early Mundano's with TDCI's were not amazing either :-/

If he wants something better than a Mondeo, or anything else, and which is also extremely comfortable then he should get in my opinion a Volvo S60 or S80 D5, that Merc will be rusted away come winter time, absolutely woeful build quality on that shape E-Class, a 530d would be alright and you could get a half decent one, but I doub it'd better the Volvo.
