Title: Taking a non MOT car to an MOT station?
Post by: Arrolman on 02 August 2011, 12:51:11
Hi,

Going to take my 3.2 manual ex-plod to get an MOT at the end of the week, will be insured but obviously no tax or MOT, legal to drive to station I believe as long as I book MOT in advance? Or has this changed?

Cheers,
Iain

I know you can drive with no MOT if you are actually taking it for MOT and it has to be your nearest station. Not sure on the tax bit though.

You are OK driving to and from a pre-booked MOT and to a place where repairs are to be carried out but you are responsible for ensuring the car is safe to drive.

Thats what I thought, can't get tax without an MOT so theres no way round that one, might just phone my mate and see if he'll lift it, save hassle, cops are a pain around here at the moment

Cheers,
Iain

My mate and I once got stopped taking an untaxed, unregistered, unpainted kit car to an MOT and the Police were happy once they'd seen an insurance cover note.

That was a few years ago, mind. ::)

Should be no problem provided the test is prebooked and regno is in the daybook/diary. I have had a colleague call at a garage to view the daybook in the past to check when having a car stopped and the driver was trying their hand at the taking it for a test routine.

Car needs to be insured in it's own right as well. Don't try the driving other cars extension of another policy...... :y

Gaffers trade plates!!! Only problem is if the officer stopping you gets too thorough in his/her duties you then have to register the car to said business, adding another owner to the cars history.

The police around here are very reasonable. We're a small town & they are rightly more concerned with the drink drivers, those who drive scrappers on the road with no docs etc. but leave those of us who pay to insure/tax/maintain our cars alone & allow us a little leeway on the odd occasion as taking for pre booked test etc.

They're not stupid though. Shortly after selling my 328i coupe i got a knock on the door asking who i'd sold it too, something to do with an "incident" in Lincoln. The bloke i sold it too paid cash & looked like a bit of a handful so i don't know what he'd been up to but the point is they knew the car had'nt been at my address for a month or so & also knew the Beastie & beige Mk5 Cortina i had then were mine without running any checks!!!
