I am sort of considering changing to a manual GASP oil burner .
What differences are there between the two engines?
What sort of fuel economy do they give on general running around?
Is the 2.2 a better bet purely because they are likely to be facelift cars and have done less mileage?

The Vx variant of the 2.5TD is detuned. Chipped back to normal BMW spec, its more powerful than the 2.2, and similar economy in manual form. If economy is important, avoid the auto ones, really not a good match.
Both suffer from poor servicing - The 2.5 because people ignore the BMW 4.5k oil service interval, the 2.2 because of GM's ridiculous 20k interval.
The 2.5 is much smoother.
My personal choice would be for a facelift 2.5TD with manual box, over the 2.2DTi. However, finding a high spec manual isn't easy.
Another option, considering your location, is to try to get an Opel Omega 2.5DTi, never available here, but has the BMW 2.5 common rail engine, which is better than both other choices.

A relative had a 2.5td omega for 14 years from new. I loved it as a child. she did 280000 miles in it (honestly) Always serviced correctly and never went wrong or broke down once. Obviously things wore out as you'd expect.

Varche,
if you wanted a 2.5dti left hooker(swine i want one) let me know your budget, Me and Peter will then look for one in Germany? only rule is it has to have a towbar, so we could pull a caravan back with it, bear in mind you have to allow around a thousand euro for metriculation onto spanish plates from the Deutsch and the import tax, thats a ball park figure of course!!!
and the cost of diesel from germany to here(its 2200km average distance) but they are ususally a lot cheaper and mechanically sound compared to spanish cars!!!
2.2DTI? been there hated it,bought it on a whim, lovely car but hated the engine only did a thousand miles in it, and 500 of them were done by my mate when i left it in england! but been spoilt by my old estate which was the 2.5 as you know, hate to say it but there is no comparison between the two engines in my opinion,!!
I would Second what TB says!! :y
