Title: Very sick Pug 206 HDi
Post by: twiglet on 08 August 2011, 22:38:13
Could do with some advice on this one...

Just had a phone call of a mate with a car as in title. He did a service on it at the weekend including oil and filter change. After filling the oil he checked the dip-stick and realised he had over filled it with oil, although he says "not by much".  ::)

He drove it this morning but after about a mile it started making a rattling noise under acceleration. Than it suddenly revved up to the redline by itself even when he disengaged the trottle. He quickly turned the ignition off and it stopped. At this point he could see anything for the thick smoke that had pumped out of the exhaust.

He managed to get the car back home by driving on tick over. Tonight he removed the sump plug to drain some oil out of it. Only about 200ml came out though!  :o The strange thing is that the dip stick is still showing more than the max level of oil on it!! He even put some more oil in to see if it would come out of the sump hole, but it never came out..

I thought at first the pressure had pushed oil into the turbo causing the redlining and smoke, but surely it wouldn't have burnt it all off that quickly. And why the dip stick level???

It's got me stumped!! I'm going to take a look tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestion on where to start with this...

Cheers  :y

I would say that it was burning oil, possibly forced up past the rings (going by the rattle) but it wouldn't have switched off as I experienced with an overturned diesel car in the past :o :-X :-X

Errrm... Have a good check of the level... I bet there was more oil in than he let on ;) ;) ;)

I'm surprised it switched off actually. I've heard about a few that commit suicide like that!!

Wouldn't you expect there to be oil running out of the sump plug hole if the dip stick says there is oil in it though?

I would wait until you see it for yourself before you take that as fact :-X ;)

Cant see how its possible for the dipstick to show plenty of oil and nothing coming out of the drain plug.Unless one of his bearing caps has come off and is blocking the hole. ::)
Sounds like it could have hydrauliced - the excess oil has ended up getting pushed up into the bores iirc -  which could cause a lot of pressure and do untold damage. :-/

Well he recon's he had it running for 15 minutes tonight to 'warm' up the oil before draining it, so the plot thickens...

Tomorrow should be interesting!!  ::)

Running on over-filled engine oil:

More fun with a huge exposed flywheel on an engine that isn't bolted down:

Right then, I went round to have a look at this 206 after work today...

Reading the syptoms above, can anyone guess what the problem was?

As above, and he wasn't putting the oil in the right place

He was checking the PAS fluid/Brake fluid rather than the Engine Oil level?

Am I right? Am I right?  I hope I'm right.  Really I do.  Am I right?  I hope I'm right.

I have what seems to be Albatross sh1te all over my boot lid, and I dont fancy washing it myself.  ;D

No correct answers yet...

As a clue... I've been and sorted it all for him tonight using basic service items!  ::)

I'll let it run a little longer and see if anyone hits the nail on the head...  :D ;D :y

It wasnt the sump plug he took out to drain the oil, so the possible lack of oil is a red herring.
Something blocked or restricted air to the engine and it was running on neat diesel ?

Thats half a car wash to Albs!  :y

He actually drained the gearbox oil, and then filled the engine with oil!

I drained the engine completely tonight and got just under 9 litres of oil out! Mr Haynes tells me it should hold 4.25 litres!!!  :o

Anyway, gearbox now filled with nice new oil, and engine fitted with another new filter, the correct amount of oil, and new fuel, air and pollen filters for good measure.  ;)

A good blast around the B roads and any remaining smoke from the back has cleared and she's running as sweet as a nut!  :y

Quite impressive really, and a lucky escape!!  ::)

I hope you gave him the Swansea address to send his license to.

I dont think 'everyone' should be able to do an oil change, but damn it........ if you attempt it and mess it up that bad, the only vehicle you should be allowed to travel in is the 'Special Bus'.  ;D

Purely out of curiosity, what phrases did you use when explaining it to the plum  ::)

I didn't give him too much of a hard time tbh. I could see how embarrassed he was, and at least he had a go. Everyone has to start somewhere, and at least he has learnt from the experience!  :y

air in the filter due to the rubber hand fuel pump not working properly and uv had to bleed it using the pump and the fuel bleed nipple ?
