Title: Five Years on
Post by: DaveA on 07 September 2011, 11:41:33
September marks five years of owning my Mig.
In that time I have changed the Cambelt and water pump twice, the rocker cover gasket twice, replaced the small breather pipe, the exhaust manifold gasket once, the exhaust to the cat back, front wheel bearings, front disc & pads rear road springs sounded like a shot gun when it snapped, plus the normal oil changes and a couple of sets of tyres. Thanks to OOF I've been able to do 80% of that myself :y
Just completed 90,000 miles, I've done 52,000 of them. Is this reasonable amount of work or is it excessive :question :question

I dont think any work you do to your own car is excessive, saves shed loads from the Garage, so well done, give your self some stars  :y :y

By the way hope youve done some oil changes in that time.  ;)

Chris.

I'd say you've done pretty well.   Surprised not to hear mention of wishbones in your list, nor handbrake woes.

My Thoughts:

In that time I have changed the Cambelt and water pump twice - Standard Service items so ok

The rocker cover gasket twice - Unusual unless the breathers were a bit clogged and would be dependent on oil change history probably rpior to you obtaining it,

Replaced the small breather pipe - Ok given the above cam cover gasket jobs

The exhaust manifold gasket once - A known issue with these engines although its normaly due to the manifold/studs.

The exhaust to the cat back - Fine - service items

Front wheel bearings - Not to common but they can get a bit of play in them

Front disc & pads - Service items so fine

Rear road springs - Unlucky but given the state of the roads around Melton, no surprise

Normal oil changes - Service items so fine

A couple of sets of tyres - Again wear items so fine

I have always said, a car is only as good as its last owner!
