Title: What a day I had on Saturday.
Post by: car-nut on 11 September 2011, 20:15:56
I gave up on the Vectra, tried to get it started in the morning, gave up after flooding the engine again! Then called my break down service and got them to take it to the only Garage that would answer the ruddy phone on a Saturday.

So my Vectra is now sitting with a Jag E-Type, a Lotus the same as James Bonds in the film where he went under water and some other vintage cars.

£50 an hour is the labour charge GRRRRRRRRRRR but it had to be done, just got to wait until Monday afternoon to find out weather it is terminal or easy.
I am hoping the car is rescuable cheaply as I do love the Vectra.

A few things spring to mind...

Why blank out your reg. but not anybody else's?
Is the car following the recovery truck left hand drive?
Is your Vectra a 2.2 petrol?

Forget that last question, I've just seen your post on another Vx. forum, I was thinking timing issues before I read it...

Vectra 2.2 SRi. Not Starting, VERY URGENT HELP NEEDED PLEASE???!!! Thank you.
I really am at the end of my teather today with my Vectra to the point that I have walked away from the car now.

First of all, it was running really lumpy, diagnosed as the coil pack, so I replaced the coil pack, and it started and ran worse than ever, the engine was hunting, so I took it for a 2 mile round drive, it drove PERFFECT, Most powerfull it has ever been since I have owned it, then we turned the engine off, took the air filter housing off and the pipe from the housing to the inlet, just to see if it was clogged up and to check that the butterfly was moving freely, Then put it back together, and tried to start it, at first it wouldn't start and then with a boot of the accelerator it went and made a horrible noise like something had caught on a pully and was grinding round and within 2 seconds of that noise I shut the engine off.

I then re traced my steps to see if I had maybe left something loose, and got a friend to double check everything I had touched, went to start it and it was turning over but not firing, we kept trying and trying to the point of flooding the engine, left it for about 10 minutes and tried again and then while having the key turned with foot flat to the floor trying to get it started it started back firing, every so often.

With no luck and a lot of swearing, I called my break down service who came out, scratched his head, fiddled with it, stuck a jump pack on it as the battery started to get low, and he severely flooded it and said he thinks that the engine is severely flooded and that I need to take the battery off and charge it. It is charging as we speak, and leave for 2 days, or take the battery off and take the coil pack off and spark plugs out to allow the petrol to evaporate, I have removed the coil pack and plugs and he said to leave it till tomorrow or Saturday and try again, I am now waiting until tomorrow, And to rule out the coil pack we tried putting the old one on too to see if it would start and no luck!

In case it doesn't start tomorrow, is there anything else that could be the problem? Maybe something I have missed?

Cheers

Liked the many snaps of the Vectra on the breakdown wagon - really interesting mate :-?  Maybe one snap would have been adequate  ;)

Best pic was the last one - spotted a red TR on the left. :y

I know a lot of those 2.2 Vectras have a dodgy oil nozzle to lubricate the chain which often fails...

Hope your not a victim to that or its engine rebuild time.

I am ignoring the comments above.

However all is not lost and the Vectra had a fault I would never had worked out myself.

The power steering pump was 1 of 2 things stopping the camshaft from turning and the 2nd thing is a mystery still.

I was supposed to be picking the car up this afternoon after finding out the fault as I thought it would a be sensor.

But there is something catching on one of the pulleys with the chain on it, and the timing is out.

Once the timing has been done and the mysterious object has been removed and a new guide rail is fitted the car will be coming home, And then my mate and I will be finishing the work.

And then pay another £41 for the VOSA VIC test as the car died after the deadline to re arrange or cancel the test so have lost that.

What a way to spend my wedding anniversary day today. Sorting the ruddy Vectra out.

Part of the issue is timing.

I didn't make fun of the o.p.
I do try very hard not to take the p, but often end up sounding sarcastic instead, thing is I don't really care.
 :y
I did put up a few pic's of the van, that was mainly just to try and drum up a bit of interest to see if it would be worth pursuing as a viable buisness option, also I thought it may be of interest to people using a car forum.

Vectra is being sold needing a new engine as the engine in it has had it. I didn't know these cars had 2 chains, the bottom chain was broken and the valves are bent, got quoted over £1k to sort it or £900 if I supply an engine inc cost of engine cost and fitting. Stuck the vectra up locally for £350.

I was in my local vauxhall garage the other day, and as I walked in, the parts guy was on the phone...

'what's the registration?...'

'ah, the 2.2...'

'The filter I have in stock, but you won't need a cambelt, it's a chain on that engine...'

'well you shouldn't need a new one, with regular oil changes and never let it get low it'll last the lifetime of the car sir...'

'well I say pretty much...'

'that'll be fine...'

'ok thanks bye'

Didn't sound too positive which is a shame, I haven't had one yet but I'm
Of the opinion they're damned good engines.. Hope ya get what it's worth mate ;)

The lower chain is for the balancer shaft, not the cam shafts, it runs off the crank and helps to make the engine a little smoother. Some people take out the balance shafts to free up B.H.P.
You must have been unlucky for it to have taken out valves.

Good luck selling it. :y

Vectra Gone, Sold it for £220 to a breakers who collected it from the garage it went to. Nice easy transaction, it went on Gumtree at midnight and was sold by 7.20am!

And then I drove to Brighton and bought this:

4 Reasons,

1. Need a 4x4 in winter where I live.
2. Practical and get the dogs in it.
3. A Roadworthy working project
4. It was the right price!

Mechanically this car is spot on, body work is rough but not rot. The chasis is perfect,

It needs a service,

Rear Brake Pads,
Front Wing,
Drivers Door catch as the door doesn't hold itself shut. Rope is what we used to get her home.
Front and Rear Bumper are coming off to be sanded, treated and painted black again.
Roof needs the seal re fitting as it was flapping about on the A27 so I parcel taped it down as that was in the Frontera.
1 Tail light needed.
The stereo needs taking out and the aerial refitting and 2 wires swapped over for the memory to hold.
4 new speakers!

That is all.

So far I have bought the full service kit today but weather not permitting the job, and the rest will be done within 2 weeks.

But until the door catch comes in the post that I bought and paid for yesterday the Frontera is not being used for obvious reasons.
