from my point of view, i don't see what makes caravan holidays cheap.
I 'decent' caravan is what £5,000?
You have to pay around £20 odd ish min per night for a pitch.... you get crap MPG towing them.
You then need to buy you own food....
A nice hotel is what, £50/60 a night? I stay at Marriott's quite a bit, and you can stay there for 70 quid a night with breakfast...
With the recent trend in environment cars ect, to me a caravan is un-environmentally friendly.
If i drive from here to Edinburgh to go on Holiday, i could average 35mpg... towing a caravan it would be like 15mpg.... which does a lot more harm to the environment!
Cars also get stuck behind them, causing the following cars to use more fuel.....
Save the world, and use hotels! ;)
rant over!

Tunnie my young friend....
I found holidays abroad were to much like hard work when you have kids, bottles and sterilizers, pushchairs etc.... also money becomes far more tight as you don't understand how much children cost until you have them.....
So people need a holiday, alot buy Caravans for far less than £5000 (like me) then have a holiday in Cornwall or another gorgeous place in Britian. I was booked up for 3 weeks, last week of July + first two weeks of August for just over £300...
As for getting stuck behind them I understand where your coming from but you wouldn't have been stuck behind me, as i did 70 mph all the way on the motorway....People with Caravans are stereotyped not all drive at 20mph ..........
Also ask most caravaners and there cars don't do as bad on mpg as You think.....
My little Rant Over ;)

And Tunnie the Eco Warrior - are you the same caring individual that owns 2 cars and wants a V6 Omega to drive 5 mins to the station :o
And are you the same Tunnie who plans on leaving the longest oil slick from the UK to the Autobahn until you dump the lot at 100 MPH+ :o
Or do you secretly drive a Prius but don't like to say? :-?

LOL :y

Just to add to the 'Green' debate on caravanning. If we agree that towing a caravan for say 200 miles returns say 20 mpg and not towing returns say 35 mpg then the extra fuel consumption is 4.29 gallons each way or 8.58 gallons on the round trip. Compare this to any form of international travel and it is not exactly gas guzzling.
If you then add into this equation that caravans normally operate on around about 10 amps for their total elctricity supply which is a fraction of an hotel what with it's unnecessary lighting, air-conditioning, heating etc. not to mention staff journeys to and from work, and suppliers, laundry energy consumption etc etc etc.
Caravanners rely on much less water due to the fact that, if you have to fetch it yourself and throw it away yourself you tend to be far more careful with how much you use. (Although, having said that I still have a shower every Sunday whether I smell or not).
Given the above issues, all of you polluters who don't caravan should hang your heads in shame. It is not the smelly army who are polluting the planet it is you. ;D ;D ;D
