Pick your brains time on computer problem..
My computer wired to a Netgear 834g router.
Daughters computer hooked up to the same on via wireless..
I dont have connection problems at all when the daughters computer is off, as soon as she goes on the internet but connection keeps dropping.. Its as if she is taking all the bandwidth or whatever its called..
Now this is pi$$ing me off. Is there any way i can cut down her connection.. :o
She is only on a kids chatroom..Is there something i can look for at all. Ive checked and there is only the 2 computers connected to the router so no body else is hooking in to it.. If i stop the wireless connection to the daughters computer mine is fine..Baffled.. :-?

2 things to check....
Check her computer for nasties
Check Netgear for fixes (Netgear routers are notoriously buggy)

No nasties on mine,, will check daughters computer. Mine is scanned very regular with AV, Firewall etc.
Will also check netgear for any updates.. :y

Yeah, was thinking nasties on hers. Other possibility, check hers isn't set up for ICS, that may have an adverse effect...

It seems to me that Tiscali is playing up tonight also..
I shall check her ICS.. The only way i have got back on the internet now is by knocking her computer off.
Ive just done a scan for nasties on both computers the only thing on hers its not allowing an AV update will investigate that asap..
Thanks for your help TB.. :y

well if you're connected via a router then you shouldn't need ICS enabled on either machine. The other thing that comes to mind - especially if you can't access anything when her laptop is connected - is that maybe both your machines have the same IP address. Normally you'd just leave DHCP enabled so that the machines are allocated a (different) address by the router. Run CMD, type in IPCONFIG /ALL on your machine and note the results. Then connect her lappy, do the same thing and compare the results ... IP address should be different. Subnet mask, default route and DNS server settings should be the same ...

I find the 834 range very stable these days.....been around a while now so the firmware is pretty good.
Not very good at resisting lightning strikes though (but no DSL router is!)

Well its lightning here at this moment, so fingers crossed,, what will be will be.. ;D ;D
What firmware are you running on your router as im still on V 1.05 and having problems updating..
There goes another flash... ;D ;D
If you dont hear from me again tonight im fried... ;D ;D ;D

The usual warnings with netgear apply - if your setup is working, don't touch the firmware, as they frequently break more than they fix.

This might help you to decide when to unplug it and bury it in a lead box in the garden...
