Are we condoning this behaviour? :-/

Could I just remind everyone that this photo was taken in Germany on an un-restricted part of the Autobahn system and that no animals where killed or injured in the making of the picture. :D

I bet the fuel gauge needle was moving pretty darn quick there as well. ;)

Just a bit, the fuel gauge was dropping as the speed increased.
Lucky for me that I was stationed in Germany with the British Army and got Tax-Free fuel about £15 in fill it from empty!!

Reminds me of when I went to Texas to work for a while, in 1999. 70 cents a gallon. :P
It breaks my heart fuelling in this country. :'(
£63 yesterday. I need a better paid job.

Since moving back to the UK the Omega is only for Sunday's, lucky I get to drive a 1.9 cdti Vauxhall Signum 150bhp the rest of time.

Pleased to meet you bye the way, Jim.
I am in your area this weekend. If I see you coming up behind me on or aound the M8 & M77, I'll be sure to get out of your way. :P

Pleased to meet you to, don't worry, if there is one thing that the high fuel prices have done it's made me drive more ecomonical :D

Yup, 156mph, confirmed/backed up by Origin B2 GPS. 8-)
She still had plenty left, but i wasn't in Germany, and i kinda like having a licence, so i bottled it.
When you go back to the Fatherland and i come visit, you can do the filming/picture taking. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
145mph before I bottled it.......private road/runway, calibrated speedo.
-
i need my licence for work, lose it and i lose my job and income....
i have no doubt the miggy would be good for 130/140mph, maybe one day i will try it, on a runway or an unrestricted section of autobahn
-
I took mine upto 46 today, in a 50 zone. ;)

Not really, when I get up to that speed, I pull over into the middle lane. 8-)

That's way too fast for the middle lane!!!
You should be in the 'fast' or overtaking lane as they call it in some book. The Highway Code i think it's called. Apparently it's the prequel to The DaVinci Code.
I've never read it so i can't say for sure. ;)

I actually tried a few times to venture into the fast lane myself, but is was practically impossible due to a constant stream of madmen in Omegas fyling past at 156mph.

I was gonna say that about going in reverse.

yeah right ! dont believe you , have you got pics to prove? ;D
-
actually Jim
loking at the pics again - you had pretty much a full tank of pertol at that point - wonder how much more she had in her top end, and then againwith very little fuel.
155mph may have happened! 160 anyone>?
-
My old Uno Turbo would do 43 in 1st (This was checked on GPS), and reverse had the same ratio as 1st, so when you nail it, it pushed you forward, and until you got to the red line, it was hard to get your foot off the pedal.
Was "slightly" modified, would 0-60 in 6.2!
-
i need my licence for work, lose it and i lose my job and income....
Same as....therefore dont usually go over 80/90......yesterday tho.....due to bad planning.....my meega hit 95 at one point!......this MUST be a world record for a 4 pot! :D

BREAKING NEWS
The Swindon police are trying to trace the owner of a Vauxhall Omega 2.2 CD Estate that was reported doing 95mph.
Quote, from the chief constable "We would like to interview the driver, as no one here believes a Vauxhall Omega 2.2 CD Estate can get anywhere near that sort of speed"
Inquires are continuing. :o

Weight doesn't play much of a role in top speed, just how long it takes to get there. By far the biggest force in the opposite direction to that of travel is aerodynamic drag, as it has a quadratic relationship to speed. When I had an Impreza WRX STi with just over 300 BHP it would easily outpace my 840 at speeds below 100 MPH, due to lower weight. But the 840 will do a good 12-13 MPH more at the top end due to having much better aerodynamics, which would require a significant power increase for the Subaru to match - you require more power for every extra MPH as the speed increases.

The US is quickly catching up though... I'm just back from San Francisco where I paid around $3.20-$3.30 per US gallon for standard petrol. Still only half the price of ours, but only a year ago when I was in LA it was around $2.20/gal and they were moaning about the uber-high price back then!

I saw 150 on my MV6 Saloon, when i first bought it. Wouldn't now as I have eco tyres on it & could do with the steering sorting out/tightening. Feels a bit wooley sometimes, not dangerously but a bit unnerving.
-
Never tested it.
No really, I never have.
:P
Cheers.

Obviously by the xxx, you mean 29.9mph, because like me, you wouldn't speed. ::)

Not really 'cos Jim started it as a picture of his own speedo on the Autobahn. It just kinda grew from there. ;)
I've also got the video of him when he actually done it, that's even better. :y

Got in a bit of a race with a spotty rep in his BMW rep-mobile up a long hill - thats when I realised my autobox in sport mode locked out 4th. Switched off sport, got to 140 before braking (speed camera at top of hill). BMW overtook me at this point, and sped past the camera. Shame.....
(Obviously, the bit I was speeding on was private road ::))

it's more than a little unnerving being stopped by a man driving a 911 and carrying a machine gun...... (some years ago in a slightly tweaked ;) 24V senator, clocked at 152, and still accelerating)
in more recent times, both our V6's have been timed and clocked on the right bits of "Tarmac with dotted lines" , the Sintra at 143 and the Elite at 148.
neither showed much inclination to do any better....... mind you both were 4 up with luggage as well.

I don't see anything wrong with someone testing his car on an empty straight road at 5 o clock in the morning. I hope that police officers on here ate least know that really it is not speed that causes accidents, it is speeding at the wrong situation that causes accidents. What is safer? a spot on super maintained omega cruising at 100mph or a nova that just passed its MOT going with 70mph (the politically correct one). I think we all know the answer.

143mph in a Sintra are you mad ;D ;D
Saying that I've done 137mph in my wife Zafira (also in Germany) :y
The wider track and longer wheelbase of the Sintra makes it extremely stable , at any speed.... to be honest, it feels more secure at 140Mph than the Omega does..
and the commanding driving position definitely reduces the tunnel vision effect at high speeds....
We had a Zafira on Loan for a week when the Sintra was in for some work.... driving it rapidly cross country was very revealing... even the wife commented on how much more nervous and unstable it was braking into corners and how the balance was just nasty.....
The Sintra was much more like the Senator in terms of it's composure during weight transfer, and lateral acceleration.
apart form being inclined to understeer thanks to being front wheel drive as opposed to rear... but lifting off could still correct it quite happily
and in a straight line... it's like a jet propelled bus.

in my old elite. 145mph no photos or gps >:(

on my bike. 184mph. errr not on an air field,

Doesn't matter where you are in the world, a blow out at these speeds will instantly kill and likely to cross the central crash barrier - potentially killing more.
In the UK, expect a ban anything over 97mph in a 70mph if caught. And expect arrest and prison for 125+
I do hope these cars are thoroughly checked for nails, brakes, etc before these speeds. And don't forget the notorious brake fade the meegas can get just from one heavy braking session.
That's enough preaching from me.....

Well Thank You For That,
I Understand Your Concern's and I can only speak for myself in this but I'm a Fully Police Trained Professional Driver and the cars which we use are in top condition with no expense spared for servicing or repairs. And I would only drive at these speeds if road conditions permitted it. :)

I know you really know what you are talking about, and I agree.
However, the brake fade bit, I've only noticed with 3rd party discs/pads - with the genuine ones it doesn't seem to be a problem (and I work in MK, so on those days when the car is anxious to move, the brakes get a good thrashing ::))

Blowout? Fox etc........
I'm still a bit wary about high speeds after hitting a badger a few years ago in an Escort van at less than 50MPH.
What a mess & that was mainly the van!

What other 'Top gear treats' has anyone created?

I used to do a lot of night driving for a security company so quite a few.
A badger, two foxes, two cats a dog, a pigeon & 100's of rabbits.........
-
A fox and I had a sad meeting one night when I was travelling at 130 plus.... No time to brake, but it certainly was a Dry Blackthorn moment - held on with both hands.... Daft bu**er just sat there in the road, staring at the impending doom of a 5 series Beemer bearing down on him...
Partner was snoring in front passenger seat and almost had kittens when old Reynard rattled his way along the underside of the car.
Brought the car to a halt and the steering wheel was almost at 90 degrees off centre when driving straight ahead. Had to powerwash the underside before the mechanics would go anywhere near it to repair. Fair enough, I suppose!
And the fox got second prize....

I was once a passenger in a Rover P60 on a motorway when a wheel came off a mini, disappeared under the car and wedged itself under the brake pedal.
Driver managed to steer onto the hard shoulder, and bring the car to a halt with the handbrake, from about 65 mph.
Fortunately, the motorway wasn't busy.
Frightening :o

when i was an aprentice i worked for my then local bus company.
they used to run coaches from luton airport to victoria staion in london and back.
about once every 6 months or so, some loon on a moped doingthe knowledge would try and turn right at swiss cottage, from the left hand side of the coach.
well it was comon practice that the aprentice with the lowest grades at collage would get to clean the front of the coach once the police had finished with it.
that was a pleasent experiance,NOT
mind you .the bodshop manager was always kind enough to supply an extra bucket and some mints ::)
-
Friend of mine did hit a Horse right up the backside once in a Transit van.... The Horse won!!!!!!!
-
the front end of a transit are rearly piss weak, i was run over when i was 9 by a mk2 transit.
fractured my skull ,broke my coller bone. ripped a few ligamnents of my left eye,(having eyes that look in difrent directions is rearly disoriantating)
i pushed the radiator into the viscous fan. did enough damage to the transit to have it written of,tht and its engine overheated and seized solid lol

I think you'll find that statistically it's a 50/50 chance of going either way and so just as likely to go into the boondocks.
As for Top Gear treats, I've had quite a few kangaroos, but then they do have have a habit of not looking where they're going - particularly at night!
-
hi, well if your going to die, die having fun, its the only guarantee in life so live it to the full.
I`ve hit a duck at 90 in a diesel mondeo down a country lane and cracked the fog light.
and in jasper carrots word " i sore a slow moving old man as he bounced off the bonnet of my car"
It`s happened It`s happening and will always happen so enjoy driving while they still let us. LOL
Cheers Pete

theres a guy on vxon that had 160 out of his said his fuel camp was doing 4 to the gallon iirc so thats about .5 to the gallon really

125mph was going for 130 when mini copper pulled out in front of me and had to slow down, not bad for a 2.0L 16V and a four potter ,but only once cos want to keep my licence :y :y :y
-
late for a job interview i hit 120, then ran out of road
-
I used to hit little bit over 200 km/h, that would be 125 mph i think... :)
I don't think that X20XEV Caravan is capable for something faster... :) maybe just a little bit on the downhills :)

Havent realy give the CDX a top end boot yet, but I will when she is right! 8-)
But had me old 3L elite up to 147, it had a little more, but i bottled it ;D ;D ;D
The wife was infront of me at the time in hers, and she was pulling away from me at my bottling point, she recons she had it up to 152, mind she did have a few more extra tweaks then me! ;D ;D
Very very dangerous, irisponsible, and imature examples of driving on the roads! And I would knever condone such a driving style! 8-)

Well i travel to work at 3am on an unrestricted german motorway it`s a straight line for about 15 miles
i regurly get to about 240/250 KMH about 155MPH its a little uphill for the last 6 miles so i have not managed to red line it as to yet. On the way home in the afternoons is BMW Diesel time, they are taking over the roads over here, topping 140 quite easily, so it`s nearly impossible to get a good top speed, not that i really want to when you see what is sat behind the wheel sometimes. I would`nt say the most of the speeders are old but when they pull up in front of the old age pensioners home the Zimmerframes are all oiled and waiting to go ;D ;D ;D
