Title: Fuel Consumption? How about 1660 galls/hour...
Post by: hotel21 on 31 August 2006, 12:28:33
Was prompted by the other thread regarding fuel consumption and, as I have a boring day stuck at home today, I'm browsing the web kinda randomly.

A previous trade of mine was diesel engines.  BIG diesel engines....

Check out the following quote, if you think less than 20 is to the gallon is poor.

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98".  Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower.  Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Some facts on the 14 cylinder version:
Total engine weight: 2300 tons  (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)
 Length: 89 feet
 Height: 44 feet
Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm
 Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption).  Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour.  At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency.  That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion.
For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.

Even at it's most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.

Given that the ship will travel circa 350 miles per day, that works out at roughly 0.21 miles to the gallon....  Thats not a displaced decimal.  Point two one miles per gallon   :o  Thats about 370 feet.

MarkieC - your consumptions not to bad matey!!

Ahhh!

I was intrigued what your avatar was, now it makes sense!!

I used to work in John Browns in Clydebank who built gas turbines. they used twin turbocharged and supercharged Detroit Diesel V12's, that were twice as big as my car, as starter motors!!! I don't know what displacement they were, but they were diminutive in comparison to the monster in your link.

Anyway, in stark contrast here's the smallest! 0.019 CuIn displacement.

The avatar is the cross section of a 2 stroke marine diesel.  Thought it might have get a few heads scratching..  Works basically the same as the 125cc 2 stroke bikes, just a bit bigger!!

The turbo's on these things weight around 7 tonne - each.  You can get a 35 foot stepladder in the engine crankcase.  The original big bits for little hands.  :)  Pistons are about 6 foot plus from top of the crown to the bottom of the skirt.

They start with compressed air, injected in turn into each cylinder to get the thing rotating, then off with the air, on with the fuel, and momentum gets it running.  110 revs flat out (forward or backwards, runs either way) and dead slow ahead/astern at 35 revs.

Quite straightforward to work on, nothing too much in the way of electrics or electronics, unlike the 'Meega.  Not got the same acceleration though...   :(
