I need to copy some DV video from a Sony camcorder to my Mac tonight. I've plugged in the Firewire and tried turning it on to different modes, but neither side seems to notice that the other is there. Borrowed camera, no instructions, so how do you do this? Cheers.

PITA. Instructions said that the time has to be correctly set on the camera?! Still didn't work. I am soooo glad that I didn't buy one of these heaps of junk myself.

What software are you using?

Mac, so only thing I guess is iMovie?

Ah so not a PC, DV out is usually enabled regardless, don't know anything about Mac firewire or editing packages.

make sure the camera is switched to VCR play back mode

I did. Tried others too. No sign of a connection. Camera has USB too, but don't think that you can get data easily that way? I'll try a HDD camcorder someday, but this puts paid to any idea of getting a DV camcorder. Useless. >:(

Theo I have been trying to do this myself and have pulling my hair out >:(
All done now though :)
I bought a "Grabber" that has two plugs, one into a firewire port the other into In on your sound card... Plug opposite end with Red, White and Yellow connectors into your CamCorder/Video.... Put in the software disc follow the instructions and Happy Days ;)

Theo, the USB port will be for stills only, so you can't use that. You may still need a driver on the Mac to be able to control the camera.

Cheers guys. I gave it all back to the owner to sort out. He'll give me a DVD with the raw video, and I won't bother borrowing the camcorder again.
