Title: Profiles
Post by: ffcgary1 on 26 July 2007, 21:51:09
Can it  be changed so that  filling out all details in the profile section be made mandatory,ie location, car, and engine size model, so that if ?'s are asked we can have some idea about what they are on about.A lot of newbies are asking questions and they have no details to see. :(

I am against that idea - some people may not wish to give too much info about themselves initially, and rightly so, as the net can be a nasty place.

I agree, having the details in the profile is immensely useful, but I feel giving such info should be voluntary...

What does everyone else think?

Agreed, I was nervous about giving out too much personal detail when I first came here. That was until I realised that most people are genuine although you never know who is looking.

if it was mandatory, people can always answer :
Drives - A Car
Location - Home
etc

Agree we often do seem to ask newbies the same questions.
Flip side is the more a website demands to know, the less likely I am to sign up.

Could you just adjust the signup page to say please add you car and location details, as it will aid us in resolving your problems

Sounds like a plan!

if people dont give the info, a person asking probably gets them to fill it out more accurately than a form

As soon as they realise how friendly and helpful this place is, see that we all use the profile box usefully,  the trust is earned.

WE know we are a friendly, helpful bunch, but the person filling out the form may not.  There are a lot of paranoid people out there...(and just cos they are paranoid, doesnt mean people are not out to get them!)

I think it may annoy potential new users having to provide non essential information to sign up.

We know that we do not malicously use the info, and we also know that the IP (in some cases) can provide lots of info, but with everyone being told to be careful about how much info they give on the web, I fully understand if they don't want to.

I could modify the welcome email that comes from Laidback to suggest filling in the info, but making it compulsory will, I fear, scare people off.

I'm of the same thinking - anyhow, people usually give enough information they are comfortable giving when requesting assistance, they'll hold back if they feel the need to. It's good that we have a choice. :)
