It isnt an open season to mock and agree with the above statement you know :-/
But when at work - my mind always wonders onto here to see whats happening.
Today is my first of 14 consecutive days off, and I havent been on here as much, i havent been out in the nice weather and i havent done nearly as much with the projects as i should...
Instead ive been up since 730am.....and been checking into my work emails every half hour or so... :-/ :-/ :-/
Anyone else do this when off?

:o :o :o Absolutely NOT!! Mark you're a sad man!! ::) ;D
I can pick up work e-mails from my xda phone but I choose not to when I'm off work - they have enough of my time when I'm there. :P Mind you, I did get phoned by my office a couple of times when I was Ibiza last year - trouble is I'd had far too many San Miguels to give them a sensible answer. 8-)

maybe it shows i have no confidence whatsoever in the organsation to do things properly.. :-/ :-X

Hmmm......that's a bummer if you don't have the confidence in your staff to cover in your absence :(
I must admit when I come back from time off work, I still have a fair old pile of work to deal with but in general my staff look after things pretty well. :y
Mind you Mark, being consiencious isn't a bad thing. :y

1 phone call to your work mates Markie.. JFDI..or else... ;D

gotta be honest, if i take a week or two as a break from work, no particular plans, i dont see the mornings, unless its a direct result of not going to sleep the night before until the early hours!

:)Much as i admire your work ethic you delegate at work but priorotise on your downtime.
I know our jobs differ in thier nature but i NEVER take my cab phone home (when i do get home), despite owning my house have no landline and leave my phone downstairs wnen it's time for "tubby n'nights!!!" I sometimes leave my own phone in the truck as well just to pee everyone off. We all lived without mobiles once!
You're obviously concientious Markie but give yourself a break and look forward to kickin' a** when you go back ;D :y

There is nothing backward about you but there is something wrong with the attitude to management in this country.
When I was first appointed to the post of General Manager, my boss was happy because he had filled the position from within the company, thus not having to pay a higher salary to someone from outside, he never had to pay an agency fee and he never had to teach someone how the company worked. I had been very good at my previous job, in sales, and was very much a company man.
I worked every minute there was to prove that he had made the right decision. I took the phone home and left it beside the bed and urged my night shift manager to call me if he had any problems. I took the phone home at weekends and urged the weekend shift manager to ring me if he had any problems. I took the phone on holiday and urged anyone to phone me if they had any problems. I was convinced that the place just couldn't run without me.
There weren't any problems because nobody made a decision without referring to me. If I got it wrong it was my fault and I put it right. This situation was ultimately unsustainable, I was bound to get worn out and I did. Something had to change and it did.
I started, a little bit at a time, to trust my staff. I gave them the opportunity to decide for themselves. The more I trusted them the more they wanted to do things for themselves and the less I was needed. Gradually, I could afford not to take the phone to bed with me. I stopped getting calls on the weekend and I never take the phone on holiday with me anymore.
What I have discovered is that I can delegate authority to my managers. I cannot delegate responsibility but I can delegate authority whist retaining responsibility for my managers. By managing them well (I hope), they have the confidence to try things for themselves and to put right their mistakes with my support.
As I said at the start of this lengthy missive, there is something wrong with the attitude to management in this country which says that just because you get paid more than your staff you have to work harder and do more than them. I believe that I am paid more for my experience and my ability to get the best out of people, after all that is what management really is. With the correct training and an atmosphere of mutual trust I firmly believe that a manager should be able to be out of the workplace for short periods without direct input.
In conclusion, ask yourself this, does your Chief Exec/Chairman/MD take calls when he is on holiday? If not why should you? If he does then perhaps he should learn to trust his staff better!!
Sounds like a lecture, I really don't mean it to be, just my experience from seven years of general management. :)
(I still couldn't resist the smillie)

general point, i do delegate, i do have good people but i am a bit of a perfectionist...its a bit like washing your car if your particular, sure someone else could do it, but would they do it YOUR way.... :-/

:)Fair cop. I'd panic if someone else even tried to clean the car, it'd take me longer to put right than if i'd done it myself in the first place. 8-)

Reading some of your comments Guys I wonder why you dont just Clock Off and F**k off home, don't think about the hole until you Clock back on again...... People seem to think their places of work will close down without them, but as a rule they don't....
I know we have to go to work to pay the bills and stuff but not live to work :-?

Well said that man. :y
It will always be there tomorrow and, if it isn't, there will be somewhere else to go. 8-)
And remember, noone ever said on their death bed, 'I wish I'd spent more time in the office'. Plenty have said 'I wish I'd spent more time with the family'. :-/

i think the point of my initial post may have been driven by money....
I can see what my teams are doing volume of sales wise by checking into my email.....my bonuses are driven by their own output. Dont get me wrong i have a very good salary and dont live on a bonus....but when i am off for two weeks and take a substantial bonus home i think i am kind of reluctant to just ignore it for a fortnight.. :-/
Havent checked today yet.. ;D
