Can anyone explain to me what a category D insurance loss is exactly. Because this looks like an absolute bargain

cat D means it is either beyond economical repair from the point of view of the insurer or that the vehicle was stolen, insurance claim settled and recovered lets say with lock damage etc.
There is nothing fundamentally wrong with car from a safety point of view, so it is not going to crab down the road and fall apart. You are allowed to repair them and can be a great buy as you get them cheaper. However it is not a win win scenario. You paid less to buy it so expect less when you come to sell it, and of course you narrow your market as a lot of people have the wrong misconception about cat d cars, so would rather not buy, a bit like imports although this is now such a problem anymore.

So if you buy a car with the intention of keeping it for a good time its no bad thing...wish i'd asked earlier, I might have had a go at that one.

for the record:
Cat A - has to be crushed
Cat B - has to be broken down for parts only or crushed
Cat C - Repairable subject to a VIC (Vehicle Identity Check) then you can get your v5
Cat D - already explained

My missus has got the ZT190+. It's a great car despite the write-ups its had. We have had it 12 months now and it has never missed a beat. And dont take any notice of the people who tell you that the spares are not available. Just like any other car you can get either genuine MG parts or cheaper ones if thats what you want.
I would recommend them to anyone(if you dont mind a ride thats so hard it fractures your spine on a regular basis) ;D

Sporty Rovers do tend to be very hard. Tend to handle very well, remembering they are FWD.

yep cat c and D can make a good buy to fix and sell. or fix and keep. As long as you know what you are doing.
Have now had a few of these and made nearly double money, both 200 series rovers and amounting to bolt on and off front wings and bonnet/wrap round bumper needing replaced.

...what i would say is i buy cat c/d as they are and fix myself, id be reluctant to buy after someone else has fixed it. You never know how well they have fixed it. Thats just my personal preference though.

Apart from the ZT260 of course, V8 and rwd, sounds like an ideal Omega replacement if only they weren't like rocking horse poop

And there are fields full of them unsold (well Bruntingthorpe has a few!).....not my cup of tea I'm afraid, the 75 looks like a pub inside and is just not well screwed together.....given the choice, I would have a Monaro.

so would i Mark but i reckon £12000 buys you a v8 MG ZR am i right in thinking still closer to 20k for a monaro?
