Title: Which Quality Ratchet ? ?
Post by: Markie on 04 August 2007, 21:29:06
Decided to splash out....most of my stuff is sealey / draper...

But my trusty non specific 1/2" ratchet is getting loose and needs replacing...

So im going to treat myself to a top notch one...

But which one? britool, Facom, SP, Sealey.....Snap On  :o

Anyone got one of the above ? Recommendations/Thoughts?

I'd be inclined to not buy the really expensive Facom/Snap-On tools, they're good but expensive. Halfords professional range is good enough for most home use

I have a "headless" rover K seres lump spare inthe garage - outwith the car and i have decided i`d like to take it apart to see its workings...kind of hard when its on a hoist....as anytime i put a socket on anything it just swings..

Yep, got one in the garage with a v8 block attached to it....very good bit of kit. They did do a bigger one but, its a pain in the arse as the legs get in the way a lot.

Snap On every time Markie, I have had my Snap On 1/2" and 3/8's ratchets for about 12 years and are still working like they did when i first had them.... I bought 6 cheapo £5 each grips and in the job i used to be in they got heavily used, they honestly lasted around 2-3 weeks... so i through them away after buying 6 pairs of Vice Grip in 1994 off the Snap On man, I still have all 6 pairs now :y

I agree that they are expensive, but I have used my rachets everyday for years and they are still in ace condition.....I have had cheaper makes that just didn't last..
Maybe cheaper makes would be fine for diy car work, but on Lorries and coaches they weren't.

As Tina Turner would say, SIMPLY THE BEST. Snapon, Rolls Royce of tools, we use a lot of these in our heavy industry, snap on supply many of our oil rig fitters with the heavy tools, some of the sockets are the size of saucers.

...apart from tools with a ratchet! :( Honest! I returned a combination ratchet spanner that had failed, it's in the small print apparently. The lad did replace it though when I complained.

Snap On is far from the best......its only so popular with mechanics because it can be bought on the drip which when you want a big tool box or are just starting up is beneficial....

Man father has many Snap-on items including torque wrenches and sockets/ratchets.....and they are good but, only worth about a third of what they cost.

So what do you think are the best then if not Snap On? (even though your the Man I have to disagree ;)

As said near top of the thread, I don't think Snap-on are any better or worse than any other true premium tools, only cost twice as much.  They break in the same way if you misuse them ::).  So, I'm with MDTM on this one.

There are imho far better tools to be had than snap-on, they are over rated and way over priced. If I was after a good quality ratchet I would have a look and what Elora sell.

http://www.abbeypowertools.co.uk/subprod/elora-socket-ratchets-0001381.aspx.

In maintenance on Heysham 2 we will use only Norbar torque wrenches not sure about ratchets though.

Norbar torque wrenches are indeed the best of the best.....

Elora are pretty good, King Dick used to make superb ratchets.....the Snap on stuff is about on a par with Draper pro range from my experience.

As anything, it is only peoples personel opinions on which are the best tools, like the cars we drive, some think they are the dogs, others think not.

opinions only.
