Title: Anyone got a spare LTO drive
Post by: TheBoy on 10 August 2007, 12:06:50
Anyone got a spare high capacity tape drive going cheap?

As you may be aware, the old server which hosts OOF (amongst lots of other stuff) is being replaced.  The tape drive is on its last legs, and was only a DLT anyway, so didn't have the capacity.

If you know of a cheap LTO, and/or LTO tapes, please let me know.  I am keep eye on ebay already.

I can get an HP 215e LTO1 100/200gb External SCSI drive, probably also with some tapes, but I am away in Italy until end of next week. So if it can wait then consider it done...

We can wait - new server probably won't be here until new week, then it needs building, which will take a few days depending on how busy I am, so no real hurry. Much appreciated :y

I currently use an Adaptec 2940UW card - that shoudl run it, albeit not at peak performance?

Actually, I lied, the server currently has a 53C875/6 based card, but I have a 2940UW/A and a 2940UW/LE

Which would be best, or should I splash out on a new one?

Alas, DAT hasn't the capacity or the speed required. Or the reliability.

But its 8Gb on hardware compression and i could supply loads of tapes TB.....iirc it ONLY takes about an hour to write 8Gb.....you could set your alarm clock throughout the night and day to change the tapes......altho some of the tapes i have will only hold 4Gb so....1/2hr alarm intervals may be in order  ;D ;D

I have a load of 20G tapes (DDS4 is 20/40G iirc), but DAT is simply not up to job....

I think the 2940UW is gonna be 40Mb, U2 need for 80?

The funny thing is that the 215e is 80MB/s, but the HP documentation say it should go on a Ultra160 card. I have a Compaq (pre-HP era) PCI SCSI card which can go with the tape drive and that is Wide ULTRA SCSI 3, can't see why it wouldn't work with the 215e. And I should also have the SCSI cable for it...

I have bought an Adaptec 29160 Ultra160 card, so that should do the job.

MJ - is it a half helight device (thinking of removing from enclosure and fitting internally)?
