Title: KWIK FIT & TYRE WEAR
Post by: MikeDundee on 07 August 2007, 23:06:13
Well this mornign I had a flat front drivers side tyre, got the doo daa out and put air in it drove to work, within an hour and a half flat again. Had a meeting to go to via Kwik Fit :y.....They took the tyre off said ohh no this is not good, about 8inches on the inside rim were completely worn the rest of the tyre was fine though. Checked all the rest of the tyres they were OK, unexplainable why it would on have that amount of wear on just an 8inch section of the tyre. Anyway hear pound signs ringing in kwik fits ears, also commented on the red stff brake pads being ceramic against steel? ::), I told him don't worry about my brake pads just find the puncture in the tyre. Anyway turns out there was a one and a half inch rip/tear on the inside of the tyre exactly where the 8inch waer on the inside edge was. Originally he had said it was coming from the rim and that he would take the tyre off and clean it and all that, but then he found the tear, which was not evident when he was looking on the outside for air leaks :-?............Anyway forgot to stick the spare michelin in the boot before I went round to kwik fits :-[, so I ask how much then for another Pirelli, £197, but for you we can do it at £170. I replied your joking, you charged me £450 for all four pirelli's just over a year ago so how can 1 tyre be that much. He did'nt have much of an answer for that one, anyway got a cab home to pick up the michelin brought it back and that went on, go back tomorrow to get the Pirelli fitted and keep the michelin as a spare. I am not very impressed.

Oh and yes, whilst trying to figure out about the tyre wear, tracking was mentioned, I said yes i know but the last time you suggested that I went to Vx after fitting the pirellis and there was nothing wrong with the tracking >:(....Anyway somewhat peed off at the moment I am.

so you didnt learn your lesson last time never to go back to F***Wit for your tyres?

in most cases tyre wear would be roughly evenly distributed about the circumference because the tyre is obviously spinning fast, the exception is kerb damage which can happen trough a slow half revolution. Does the damage look like it could have happened on a kerb? e.g. if you went on a the pavement with all four wheels driving in parallel, so the inner side of the tyre was rubbing against the kerb...? If it isn't that that i have no idea, maybe someone else will come up with something...

Also, from your post it seems that you haven't been to Tony yet? Tsss tsss tsss (shaking my head)  ;D

But seriously, go and see him in Hemel.

Apart for this sorry for your bad experience today...

Don't know relly, never park on kerbs, thought it might have happened coming back from Basildon the other week on the dartford bridge e.g., slow moving traffic, I was watching the ships turned round and had to brake hard and the car skidded on the slope (but I think this is highly unlikely to be the cause?). EERRRMM, who is Tony in Hemel, can you post me his details. Also appears that I may or do have the wrong size bloddy rims/tyres on the blooody car aswell, that idiot up the road from madhouse tyres ;D ;D, 3 tears ago said they were the right wheels etc, when I changed from the standards. So looks like I may have to change rims and tyres at some point in the not to near distant future :(

How can they say they are the wrong rims/tyres, I had these on my miggy, I have also seen others with these sizes,
Where do they get that from.

You might want to try Elite at Rainham in Essex they have just done my current Omega and also did my previous omega.

4 wheel alignment includes the rear wheels

have a look here www.elitedirect.com

235/40/18, I believe they should be 225/45/18, and I have just checked this site out:

There's only a 2.25 % difference in diameter between those tyre sizes so what's the problem? If it works OK on the current tyre size and they fit the rims you've got stick with them.

This particular outfit are sods for pointing out irrelevant "faults" in the hope that the customer is gullible enough to say "OK, I'd better have a new set of 4 then". I would go somewhere that will give you a better price on that tyre and don't, whatever they tell you, let them fiddle with the alignment.

As for the failure it looks like you've been unlucky and had a structural failure of the tyre that's caused a hot spot for wear.

£197 for one tyre!! :o :o :o Bloody hell Mike, I paid about £90 each for the monsters on the back of mine (265/40/17) and £70 each for the fronts (235/40/17) from Tyretraders.com. Krap-Fit are ripping you right off!! >:(

As Markjay said, it's definitely woth paying Tony Bones a visit at Wheels-In-Motion over at Hemel Hempstead (just a couple of miles off the M1 (just past the intersection with the M10). Had my done a few weeks ago and a major improvement in steering and braking :y

Well went back yesterday to get the one tyre, asked himhow much they actually get their tyres for, said he did'nt know price just comes up on computer. I said well I can get 4 of the same tyres from Germany at under 300quid and a site in the UK is doing them for £141 fitted. Anyway they fit the tyre go to pay asked me for the bill for the tyre at £141 said I did'nt have it, he gave the tyre fitted for £150 ::), instead of £170 ::)....Anyway potential further thoughts o the previous days events is that the fitter exerted pressure on the worn section of the tyre to cause the tear/rip. As I was standing by him when he was checking it for air leaks, and after he mentioned it was coming from the rim I went out and had a fag, then the tear, if that tear had been there the air would have been pissing out on the outside................very strange.

And you had the alignment done too!?!?!?  :o

I had that done not long before I sold you the car. Was it out by much? Wonder if it's worth me trying to get my money back. It wasn't cheap!!

Hi rod - long time no speak. :y
Yeah they were out a lot, the front offside tyre looked ok from the outside but on the inside had worn down to the steel belt!! Rear alignment and camber was also a fair bit out. Might be worth trying to get your money back - I could always send you a copy of the alignment report.

Yeah mate, been on holiday and concentrating on other things like sorting out my recent 'track day' aquisitions so haven't had much time to catch up on what's going on in Omegaland.

Unbelievable! I was quite confident in their abilities too! Might have something to do with the wheels upsetting the equipment but even so, they never highlighted that might be an issue.

Sorry about that Bob. I'm feeling fairly bad that you've had a bit of trouble with the car. I did endeavour to sell you a sound motor, I hope you know that.

Anyway, hopefully I'll be on here a bit more frequently now.

Hey don't even start to feel bad mate, cars can be sold in the best faith but you can't predict what problems might be manifesting without you knowing. Don't think I've ever bought a car that I haven't had to chuck money at to get right.

<Sigh!> Yeah I know that bud' and good on you too.

Still miss it though. Just been on a bit of a tour in the 'Funtractor' and while it did the job, it didn't do it with the same 'pace and grace' that the Daddy would've.

Been sneaking little runs in SWMBO's Elite just for a healing fix if you know what I mean.  ::)

Wasn't far from you last Wednesday but got fouled up in the roadworks between J25 & J27 of the M25. Then our wee lass soiled her nappy and needed fed so I had to get off the Motorway and got lost going round the North circular. Didn't have any choice as the smell was awfull and it was no good opening a window 'cos it was over 30 degrees outside!!

The fun of family holidays and the open road eh!?!?  ::)

Actually we had a great time.  :y
