This has irked me all day >:(
At the start of the football season, i decided to deposit some funds into an online gambling account for betting. I dont gamble outwith this, no grand national, no lottery. I dont smoke, drink heavy or do anything rmotley naughty, So if this is my only vice then i apologise.
To put it into scale i wanted to deposit a whole mortgage sapping £20 into the betting account to put £1 and £2 bets on matches.
My Platinum card, from a very well known provider was declined twice online and twice over phone. A tad concerned by this knowing there was ( or should be) substantial funds available i called them.
My card had been declined by the issuer. The reason - they dont support gambling transactions.
Now people put aside your thoughts on gambling for a moment - we all have a vice or two...do you think this is correct?
If this is a precedent how long before a bank or credit card company decide they are right to, on a daily basis, decline at will transactions they believe are morally wrong...
such as ....
Buying cigarettes in tesco...DECLINED
Buying fuel from the likes of Shell who allegedly have some dodgy actions in certain continents...DECLINED
Buying goods from brands like Nike who allegedly pay a pittance to far easters workers....DECLINED
Paying for road tax on a 4x4, v6, V6 DECLINED.
As far as i am concerned how i spend my money is my business, i pay my credit card bill when it comes in so it frankly is my money.
I did have the last laugh though -I balance transfered what was on the card to another company, also used another card to deposit my funds. Tonight i am £54 up and awaiting a call to discuss moral banking ( i cant quite remember doing this when i got my banking qualifications, or when completing my Economics degree....)
So the Executive Office, of American banking giant Citibank are calling me Monday to talk it over :-/
Oh and would you believe my initial call was taken by an Indian contact centre advisor ( ironically being exploited by being paid a pittance....? ::))
Discuss >:(

tossers

So according to Citibank, it's immoral to gamble but perfectly ok to rip off some Indian call centre worker in the name of profit.
F**K em as you say it's your money and will spend just as well with many other banking companies that aren't so "moral".

And talking of tossers, Barclaycard >:(. Bunce of theiving tossers.
-
That is ridiculous >:(

What a bloody cheek..Stuff them Markie.. >:(

That's bizarre. :o
If you have one of those National Lottery fast pay cards (if you do the same numbers each week), you can pay for the lottery at the checkout when you do your weekly shop...and pay by card.

i see your point, and as you say, it is your money, do with as you please, but gambling is extremely addictive to many people, not suggesting for one minute that you would be weak willed enough to get addicted, but adictive gambling is a major result of shockingly high debt, moreso than say a loan taken out for an ordinary indulgance such as a few grand for a car, and the banks want to protect themselves, as well as protecting the customer (in this case that seems more of a priority protecting themselves than the customer)
it's kind of a good idea not thought out well enough, and would be good if this was an option presented to you at the time if getting the card, and if anything, they should just put an agreed limit on, since you only intended a £20 deposit!
its almost similar to a scenario that happened to a mate of mine who had his mobile disconnected because his bill was unusually high, they didnt bother to contact him, just cut his phone off, yet he was aware of his high usage that month and had sufficient cash to pay it!

Altho i do agree with your points and Wills as well.....
I would check the T&C's of having the card.....if its states in them....the card isnt to be used on gambling sites or to words of that affect......then you signed agreeing to it....
If it isnt then stuff em :y ive never had a card declined on a gambling site......not that i use em very much.....prolly about 3 years ago was the last time.....and won about £2500 :y ...... they sent me a cheque :-/ couldnt understand that one......why didnt they just credit my card with the amount......thought they got a refund on cc charges if comps do that :-/ and surely would have been easier for them :-/ and not got charged for the cheque?

I just rang Citibank. Conversation went like this:
Do you believe in gambling?

I bet you £5 that you gamble within the nxxt 5 minutes
I bet I don't

I know Card Companies, Banks etc. have a moral duty to look after their customers but i think this is taking that duty a little to far >:(. After all if you old enough to get a Card and Gamble then they shouldn't treat you like a child :(.
I'm surprised they didn't smack your leg and send you to bed without any supper ;D.

Now, I don't know the reason for your credit card company's refusal but there is a general principal of English law that states that a gambling transaction is not a legally enforceable contract. I am not a lawyer but did study law about 25 years ago and seem to remember that the Gaming Act 1835 confirmed that a gambling 'contract' was not a contract at all and if you lose the bet, under this act you could legally ask for your money to be refunded and there is nothing they could do about it. There is a stated case to back this up but I can't remember the details.
Perhaps this has something to do with their refusal?
