I think at that end of market, all the branded are much of a muchness.  Nip into dixons and get a 'feel' for which you find comfortable and easy...

Well I bought a Panasonic Mini DV about 5 years ago and it has been brilliant, picture quality is good, so is the sound, easy to get footage onto my computer (now I know how ;D) to burn onto disc..
There will be better ones now I should imagine but I would get another one when this eventually goes wrong :y

Greetings, m'Lord....  ;)

I am not much of an expert on camcorders, just to add to the discussion that the wife wants a camcorder that writes directly to DVD so that the kids can view it asap, but I am in favout of Mini-DV cartridges and then writing to a DVD, because DVDs get scratched easily while the Mini-DV cartridge will keep a good source copy for many years. But it does mean that I need to write the Mini-DV to a DVD before it can be viewed.

Should have said I currently have a Sony Mini-DV and quite happy with it...

It takes me about an hour now to get footage onto my computer then burn onto a disc. The footage does take up alot of room on the hard drive though. I do seem to be getting quite an archive of mini DV cassettes ;D

Yes, they do pile up  ;D

I used to do this over firewire but stopped doing this through the PC when I bought this Philips VCR/DVD-RW standalone player, so now I simply record directly from the AV input to DVD. I know that the image is converted to analogue and back to digital this way, but I chalange anyone to spot the difference....

MiniDV is best for this purpose

Any major brand should be OK
