Title: Hello from a newbie to Omegas
Post by: Derek_in_Penzance on 14 June 2008, 21:10:32
Hello everyone,

I bought my first Omega ten days ago, off eBay, a 1998 3.0 Elite estate. I just took a chance as it was LPG and ticked all the right boxes, including being cheap. However, 166,000 miles and no MOT, so I was risking trouble, especially as I haven't the faintest idea about Omegas.  I decided to risk being able to get it through the MOT without too many problems.

First up, no speedo, ABs, TC, etc etc... so a quick browse of your forum has helped me no end. I have just spent the day removing the ABS ACU. What a pig of a job! I didn't follow the forum instructions exactly, but they were very very helpful. It shows what a tremendous boon the Internet and car club forums are. I'd have been stuck with just a Haynes manual. So thank you very much.

I won't bore you with a catalogue of my problems, instead I will post on the other sections if help is needed.

Suffice to say that I am looking forward to being an enthusiastic member of this forum and to enjoying driving my Elite just as soon as possible!

Welcome Derek, enjoy the forum. :)

Are you going to start breaking these as well or you just going to stick to the straight sixes :-/

Hi everyone, thanks for the welcome! Yes, I will be breaking Omegas fairly soon as time moves on and there are not so many straight six cars around now. I need to do a crash course in Omegas!
But I am here in a personal capacity, as on forums I try to keep a low profile business-wise. My new LPG Omega is a strictly personal thing, so that I can drive the 900 return miles to Essex and back to see my Mum and brothers etc, without it breaking the bank in petrol. If I go in Monza, by the time I get to Membury services I have to fill up again, and that is getting very painful of late. Anyway, I've always fancied the luxury, practicality and performance of the 3.0 estate, and it means my Monza can take a rest for some well earned titivation.

If I may, I will post some photos of how I managed to get the ABS ECU out today. Slightly unconventional I fear, and at one point I was ready to slash my wrists, but it may be useful to add to the more experienced procedures described on the forum. I am praying that it goes back in a bit easier -but then, I won't be putting thosed darn Torx screws back in. I plan on something a bit longer, specially made, and easier to get done up!

Hi Derek and welcome to the forum :)

If your Monza is a GSE Manual, I am very jealous ;)

Oh yes, I've been driving them since 1984! Mine is indeed a manual GSE that I bought over the phone for £100 as a writeoff. When it arrived (in 1992) I found it had only done 34,250 miles, and apart from the front LH corner which was crunched in, it was mint.

It has now just passed 59,500! (But the LH corner is no longer crunched in. In 1993 it was replaced by a complete LH front section from another car).

But this is not the place for Monza talk. Suffice to say they are superbly practical and a great drive.
