Title: Handbrake/MOT
Post by: LFF64 on 26 August 2007, 17:29:04
Right just been on vxon being nosey well actually waiting for someone to get back to me I have found a boot spoiler and grille on there for mine even sounds to be correct colour. Any way I came across a thread asking which gear people leave there car in when parked  :-X Then someone said if an auto has a handbrake thats not working for the MOT it does not matter and will not be a failure as the gearbox has a locking feature to prevent the car moving . Any MOT testers out there could you confirm this either way please  :)

I'm not a tester but a handbrake has to work to a certain percentage efficiency whether it's an auto or manual.  I've had an auto knocked back on the MOT with a handbrake that wasn't working properly

Im a tester and can confirm the hand brake has to work to at least 16% efficency and it has to work on both sides.

What a load of cobblers......

See here, it gives the brake efficiency tables adn includes specifics for the parking brake.

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_3100.htm

And they carry out the test by getting the rolling road moving and then applying the brake.....thats not something the P position on an Auto likes much as its a pawl style lock, not a brake!

In the days when I was too lazy to use mine, but handbrake seized (off), and obviously failed.

So they are talking cobblers.

Partsman - welcome to the site :y

I think I need to ask you some Qs - having trouble locating correct part number for something....

As everyone else said, hand brake is tested at MOT regardless of transmission type.

Also, not wanting to revive and old argument discussion, but the law says that a vehicle should be parked with the hand brake applied. This is regardless of whether it has auto or manual transmission. Hotel21, help me out on this one  ;D

I wonder how you test the parking brake in the likes of my brother's 7 series BMW :-/. It's electrically opperated ... and shouts at you if you try to drive off with it switched on!  ;D

These systems are calibrated to know if front wheels not turning (via abs sensors ) it will apply or release the handbrake when requested. It has to be there for mot's or whatever is equivilant? in different countries

Trust beemers to be differnt most systems just automatically release when driven off or clutch pedal is raised! :y

Also brings me back to these electronic h/brakes not being used to stop the car just hold it on an incline. As you can't activate whilst car is in motion, But once stopped will fail in h/brake on position

It is certainly my understanding that the parking brake should be applied when the vehicle is stationary.  Note parking brake, not handbrake, as some are foot operated.....  This does not include park on the autogearbox.   :y
