Hi,
I know this has absolutely nothing to do with cars but if there is any qualified electricians on here could they help out by answering me these questions?
I want to train to be a fully qualified electrician. As far as i know these are the qualifications i need to become FULLY qualified.
c&g 2330 level 2 and level 3
part p
16th edition
Is this right? , do i need level 2 and 3 or just level 2 or just level 3??
Also if i get these qualifications is it realistic to think i could walk into a job paying 25-30k?
Thanks alot in advance for any replies :y

I know someone working towards this, who I think is very close (if not already) qualified. I'll ask him...

Dont forget your NIC IEC work......and the large annual sum of cash you have to pay them to.
-
erm.. whats the nic iec work? , and why do i have to pay them a large cash sum every year? :'(
-
Because all electrical work, whcih is done for profit' now has to be tested and to do this you have to be a member of one of the covering organisations!
And they charge an annual fee.
-
Oh right , do you know what the amount is?
Also, if i worked for somebody , would i have to be nic iec registered or would it be the company?

Its normaly the company but, could be wrong....think its any thing upto 800 ish quid.
Ow yes, I am yet to meet a sparky who truely understands the does and donts for joe public with the new regs because as usual you can drive a bus through them if you know what you are doing!
-
Just another way to screw money out of people. And they wonder why there is supposed to be a shortage of tradesman. Thanks for the replies

I come from a family of sparkies, my brother is now the only one still in trade. the regs are a bit wooley, allows prices to increase....

I'm still going to train as an electrician as i am really interested in it.
Think i will work for someone for a while and then go alone if the work is there.

I dont know how much you know about the building industry, but if you are working on site then you will need your CSCS applicable to the work you are carrying out.
To get this you need to have done NVQ level 3 or above as you have missed the 'grandfathers' rights cut off date
Unless of course you are only working in 'private' houses then its easier to get away without having one.
It will take you a few years to get fully qualified, its not just an 'overnight' thing

Hi,
Ive seena few places that do the c&g in 10 weeks full time. So i have worked out it would take me roughly 20 weeks to get all the qualifications i need to get a cscs card, fully qualified with 16th edition.

Err, I think you will find that to get a CSCS card you will need to do a health and safety at work module with your NVQ. You won't be able to complete the NVQ until you have qualified as an electrician as the qualification is based on work observations. On the other hand, you can pay CSCS to do a health and safety exam separately but you will still need the NVQ as far as I know.
The only other route, that I know of, is that you can apply for a temporary CSCS card whilst you are in training but that cannot be renewed and if you don't complete your NVQ in time you are snookered.
CSCS website ishere (http://www.cscs.uk.com/RunScript.asp?p=ASP\Pg0.asp).
Hope this helps.

What you actually do is register with the CITB, do the health and safety touch screen test and apply for the 'trainee' card.
That is valid for the time you are working towards the qualifications and the NVQ, basically it gives you 3 years to get the qualification, obviously it wil be difficult to walk into a £25k a year job with a trainee card!!
-
hi there
i'm an electrician in training, and sorry to say but even if you get qualifications you will not be able to just walk into a job that pays 30k, you have NO EXPERIENCE!!!!! one of the governing bodies is the
NIC EIC, another is the ECA <eca set up nic but now nic rule most> your best bet is to get in with a company that will train you and send you on courses. thats what i did, i've been working as an electrician now for 4 years but have recently changed company and they sending me to college.
good luck, you will need it!!!
-
If i got my qualifications then i wouldnt need to go to college afte would i surely?
Im not expecting to just walk straight into a job but i think a 25k a year job as a newbie electrician cant be that hard urely?

hi
will be hard sorry to say as you have NO EXPERIENCE. the courses you were talking about earlier are for "wannabe's" or as college tutor said "two bit wannabe sparks" yes they might give you the qualifications but not experience. thats what employers want. if i came to you asking for a job, you asked what qual's i'd got i said then next thing is previous jobs and experience!!!!!!!
sorry toput dampners on things but also if you came to work in my house and i found out you had only been doing it a week i wouldn't be happy and would ask company for a more experienced person. sorry. get some experience behind you and you will be fine. first course you should do is your 16th edition! this is your reg's and you need it before you can do anything else!!!
-
Its the normal case of you cant get experience without gaining experience , you cant gain experience without getting a job that they wont give you as you dont have experience?!?! , lol
I know why there is such a shortage then. To be honest if someone was qualified it wouldnt matter a single bit to me , but thats me.

My brother knows of a lot of half decent sparkies applying for £20k jobs, so walking in to £25k with no experience may not be easy I'm afraid :(
Obviously location will make a difference, eg London I would expect better pay...

Matt, as I think most people here are saying, you are not going to walk into a job earning a fully skilled man's rate after doing a couple of college courses and applying for a cscs card.
I stand to be corrected but there used to be a 3 to 4 year apprenticeship for electricians before you could be considered to be fully trained and even then you would not be earning top whack for a few years after that.
20 weeks is less than 6 months and I don't believe any employer would entertain employing someone who had virtually no actual experience except on a trainee basis.
As others have said, don't want to p*ss on your bonfire but you have to learn to walk before you can run. :y
-
The idea that you can just walk in to a skilled job on craftsmans wages after minimum training is symptomatic of many folks these days :(
Without trying to start an argument or be rude ... look at it this way ....
If you were an employer, would you take on an unknown, untried, inexperienced person with barely minimum qualifications and pay him top rate and allow him to work unsupervised ??
NO!!
You would pay a lower wage as you would have to pay an experienced person to guide and mentor whilst the newbie learns .. so actually your costs would rise.
It's not rocket science .. it's common sense ...

Don't worry about the computer course Spongebob. I know a bloke who's got a mate down the pub who is looking for a trainee brain surgeon. Let me know if you're still interested and I'll line you up with an interview.
At the end of the day, it's not what you know........

You usually work for well less than the "going" rate, do all the sh****y jobs, but learn all the time. Then once you have proved your ability you get "promoted" to normal rates of pay ... used to be called "working your time in" or "working probation"
:)
